- Park on level ground, put the transmission in 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
- Install wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Open the hood and install a fender cover to protect paint.
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative (-) cable and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back. Negative comes off first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the belt routing and alternator
- Use a work light and find the serpentine belt routing diagram (often on the radiator support area). If it’s missing, take a clear photo of the belt path before removal.
- Identify the alternator (aluminum body with a pulley and electrical plug on the back).
Step 2: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)
- Remove any push-pins with a flat trim clip tool, then lift the cover off by hand.
Step 3: Release tension and remove the serpentine belt
- Install a serpentine belt tool 3/8" drive (specialty) (or a 3/8" drive breaker bar) into the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley by hand.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to rest. Don’t let it snap back.
Step 4: Unplug the alternator electrical connector
- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently lift the locking tab (if needed), then unplug the connector by hand.
- Connector lock tab = small plastic safety latch.
Step 5: Remove the alternator B+ power cable
- Pull back the rubber boot on the alternator power stud.
- Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the nut holding the main power cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot touch metal. Battery is disconnected, but keep it safe.
Step 6: Unbolt and remove the alternator
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with your free hand as the last bolt comes out, then lift the alternator out.
- If it’s stuck, wiggle it gently—avoid prying on the pulley or cracking brackets.
Step 7: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator into place by hand and start all mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
- Tighten the mounting bolts using a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs range): Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Install the main power cable onto the stud and tighten the nut using a 13mm socket: Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the rubber protective boot over the stud.
- Add a small amount of dielectric grease to the plug seal, then reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall/replace the serpentine belt
- Route the belt following your photo/diagram, leaving the alternator pulley for last.
- Use the serpentine belt tool 3/8" drive (specialty) to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Visually check that the belt ribs are fully seated in every pulley groove.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Install battery terminal anti-corrosion washers if you’re using them.
- Reconnect the negative (-) battery cable using a 10mm socket and snug it firmly (do not overtighten).

- Start the engine and listen: there should be no belt squeal, chirp, or grinding.
- Check belt tracking with the hood open: the belt should run centered on pulleys with no wobble.
- If you have a voltmeter, charging voltage at the battery with engine running is typically around 13.5–14.7V.
- Verify the battery/charging warning light stays off.
- Recheck for loose tools, then take a short test drive and recheck belt seating.
