How to Replace the Alternator on a 2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox (Engine: Inline 4 2.4L)
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, torque specs, and safety tips for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017
🔧 Alternator - Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. On your Equinox, replacement requires removing the drive belt and working in a tight front-engine bay, so take your time and keep track of each fastener.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The charging system carries high current.
- Let the engine cool completely before touching the belt, pulleys, or alternator.
- Keep hands clear of the serpentine belt path. The belt tensioner is spring-loaded.
- Support the vehicle safely if you need access from underneath. Use jack stands, not just a jack.
- Do not short the alternator B+ terminal to ground.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the shifter to Park and turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- If the belt shows cracks, glazing, or noise, replace it now while everything is apart.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting
- Lift off the engine cover by hand.
- Use a flat trim tool and ratchet with 10mm socket to loosen and remove the intake duct or airbox pieces blocking access to the front of the engine.
- Set the clips and clamps aside in order.
Step 3: Access the alternator belt path
- From above or below, locate the serpentine belt tensioner.
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension.
- Slip the belt off the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
- Take a quick belt routing photo first.
Step 4: Remove the alternator electrical connections
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the protective cap and main power cable nut from the alternator B+ terminal.
- Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it straight off.
- Move the wires clear of the work area.
Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Use a 13mm socket and 15mm socket to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand as you remove the last bolt.
- Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
Step 6: Install the new alternator
- Position the new alternator in place by hand.
- Install the mounting bolts finger-tight first, then snug them with a ratchet.
- Torque the alternator mounting bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect the electrical wiring
- Reconnect the alternator connector until it clicks.
- Install the B+ cable and nut with a 10mm socket.
- Torque the alternator B+ nut to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the protective cap.
Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the new or reused belt exactly as it was before.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt onto the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
- Make sure the belt sits fully in every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reassemble the intake pieces and cover
- Reinstall any intake ducting or airbox parts removed earlier.
- Use a ratchet with 10mm socket to tighten clamps and fasteners.
- Reinstall the engine cover by hand.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery and test
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and watch the belt for smooth operation.
- Check for warning lights, squeaks, or charging problems.
✅ After Repair
- Verify battery voltage with the engine running if you have a meter. You should see charging voltage, not just battery voltage.
- Listen for belt noise for the first few minutes.
- Check that all electrical accessories work normally.
- If the battery was weak before the repair, charge it fully and retest.
