🔧 Journey - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges your battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, unbolting the alternator, and reinstalling everything in the correct order.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
• Open the hood and take a photo of the belt routing sticker (usually on the radiator support). If there’s no sticker, sketch the belt path before removal.
• Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and move it aside so it can’t spring back.
• If access is tight from above, plan to remove the right-front wheel and splash shield for better access from the side.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover/intake ducting (as equipped)

• Use a Phillips screwdriver and/or 8mm socket to loosen hose clamps and remove the intake duct/resonator if it blocks access.
• Use a trim clip removal tool to pop any plastic push-pins without breaking them.

Step 2: Raise the right-front corner (if needed for access)

• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the right-front jacking point, then support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
• If removing the wheel, use a socket set to remove lug nuts and reinstall later with Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the right-front splash shield (if equipped)

• Use a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver to remove fasteners.
• Pull the shield back to expose the belt and lower alternator area.

Step 4: Release serpentine belt tension and remove the belt

• Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2" drive breaker bar on the belt tensioner to rotate it and relieve tension. (A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin handle that fits tight spaces.)
• Slip the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner back.
• Tip: Keep the belt routing photo handy.

Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

• Locate the alternator wiring at the back of the alternator.
• Use a small flat screwdriver to gently unlock the connector tab, then unplug the field connector.
• Use a 10mm or 13mm socket (varies by terminal hardware) to remove the B+ battery cable nut from the alternator output stud.
• Reinstall later with Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).

Step 6: Unbolt and remove the alternator

• Support the alternator with one hand.
• Use a 13mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
• Reinstall later with Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
• Work the alternator out through the best opening (top or wheel-well area), using a flashlight to avoid snagging the wiring.

Step 7: Install the new alternator

• Set the new alternator into place by hand.
• Start all mounting bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading), then tighten with a 13mm socket.
• Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring

• Install the B+ cable on the output stud and tighten with a 10mm or 13mm socket: Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
• Plug in the field connector until it clicks (use a flashlight to confirm it’s fully seated).

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

• Route the belt exactly per the underhood diagram/photo.
• Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2" drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt over the alternator pulley last.
• Double-check the belt is centered on every pulley groove before releasing the tensioner.

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield, wheel, and intake pieces

• Reinstall the splash shield using the trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver.
• Reinstall the wheel and tighten lug nuts with a torque wrench: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
• Reinstall the intake ducting using an 8mm socket and tighten hose clamps snugly.

Step 11: Reconnect the battery

• Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
• Tighten securely (do not overtighten); the terminal should not rotate by hand.

✅ After Repair

• Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.
• Listen for belt squeal or chirping; if you hear it, shut off and re-check belt alignment on every pulley.
• If you have a multimeter, check charging at the battery with engine running: typically about 13.5–14.7V.
• Do a short test drive, then recheck for any loose fasteners or rubbing wiring.
