🔧 Patriot - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it means disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, unbolting the alternator, then installing and tensioning everything back correctly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

Assumption: Alternator access is from the top and right wheel well.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent a short circuit.
  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; hot parts can burn you.
  • ⚠️ If lifting the vehicle, use jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ The belt tensioner is spring-loaded; keep fingers clear of pulleys.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set
  • Metric socket set 8mm-19mm
  • 10mm socket

  • Torque wrench 10-200 Nm
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Splash shield clips - Qty: 1 set (only if yours break)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing (or find the routing sticker under the hood).
  • Bag and label bolts as you remove them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the negative battery cable

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative (-) battery terminal clamp.
  • Remove the cable and tuck it aside so it can’t touch the battery post.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 2: Remove the right front wheel

  • Loosen the lug nuts slightly using a 19mm socket while the tire is still on the ground.
  • Lift the right front with a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Remove the lug nuts using a 19mm socket and remove the wheel.
  • Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs) when reinstalling lug nuts.

Step 3: Pull back/remove the right inner splash shield

  • Use a trim clip removal tool (it’s a small pry tool made for plastic clips) to pop out the fasteners.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver for any slotted screws.
  • Move the shield aside to access the belt and alternator area.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt from the alternator pulley

  • Install a 15mm socket on the belt tensioner bolt.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool 3/8" drive (specialty) or 3/8" drive ratchet to rotate the tensioner and relieve tension.
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.

Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Locate the alternator connector and press the lock tab to unplug it; use a flathead screwdriver gently if the tab is stubborn.
  • Remove the protective boot on the main power stud (B+).
  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the B+ nut and lift the cable off.
  • Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs) when reinstalling the B+ nut.

Step 6: Unbolt the alternator

  • Support the alternator with one hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and 3/8" drive extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Work the alternator free and remove it (up top or through the wheel well opening, whichever has more room).

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Put the new alternator into position and start all mounting bolts by hand (this avoids cross-threading).
  • Tighten the bolts using an 18mm socket.
  • Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs) for the alternator mounting bolts.

Step 8: Reconnect wiring

  • Install the main B+ cable and tighten with a 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs) for the B+ nut.
  • Plug in the alternator connector until it clicks.
  • Make sure wires can’t rub the belt.

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt correctly on all pulleys (use your photo/routing sticker).
  • Use a 15mm socket and serpentine belt tool 3/8" drive (specialty) to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slip the belt onto the alternator pulley last, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check every pulley to confirm the belt ribs are fully seated.

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the wheel using a 19mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle and torque lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench 10-200 Nm.
  • Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reconnect the battery and test

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging light is off.
  • Listen for belt squeal or slapping; shut off and recheck belt routing if you hear it.

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine running, turn on headlights and blower motor and confirm the engine idle stays steady.
  • Verify the belt runs smoothly and centered on each pulley.
  • After a short drive, do a quick recheck for any loose fasteners and any rubbing wires.
