šŸ”§ Sierra 1500 - Alternator Replacement

You’ll remove the serpentine belt from the alternator, disconnect the alternator wiring, unbolt the alternator, and install the new one. This is a straightforward job on your Sierra 1500, but the wiring must be handled carefully to avoid shorts.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • šŸ›‘ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator wiring (the alternator power wire is always ā€œhotā€ if the battery is connected).
  • 🧤 Let the engine cool; the belt area and engine components can be hot.
  • 🧱 If you raise the truck for access, support it with jack stands on the frame—never rely on a jack.
  • ⚔ Avoid metal tools touching the alternator power stud and metal engine parts at the same time.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive breaker bar
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3" and 6")
  • 15mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if belt is cracked/noisy)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and remove any loose jewelry (rings/watches can short electrical power).
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative (-) cable and move it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo of the belt routing under the hood.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt routing diagram

  • Look for the belt routing sticker on the radiator support/fan shroud.
  • If the sticker is missing, use a flashlight and take a clear photo of the current routing.

Step 2: Release tension from the serpentine belt

  • Install a 15mm socket on the belt tensioner bolt (the spring-loaded pulley arm).
  • Use a 3/8" drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Tip: Control the tensioner—don’t let it snap back.

Step 3: Disconnect the alternator electrical connections

  • On the back of the alternator, remove the plastic cap from the main power stud using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut from the main power (B+) cable and lift the cable off the stud.
  • Unplug the alternator electrical connector by pressing the lock tab (use a flathead screwdriver gently if it’s stubborn).
  • Torque to 15 NĀ·m (11 ft-lbs) for the B+ terminal nut during reassembly.

Step 4: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and extension set (3" and 6") as needed to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • If equipped with a rear alternator support brace, remove its bolt(s) using a 13mm socket.
  • Lift the alternator out of the bracket.
  • Torque to 50 NĀ·m (37 ft-lbs) for alternator mounting bolts during reassembly.
  • Torque to 25 NĀ·m (18 ft-lbs) for rear support brace bolt(s) during reassembly (if equipped).

Step 5: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator into place and start all mounting bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to snug the mounting bolts evenly.
  • If equipped, reinstall the rear support brace using a 13mm socket.
  • Final tighten: Torque to 50 NĀ·m (37 ft-lbs) for alternator mounting bolts.
  • If equipped: Torque to 25 NĀ·m (18 ft-lbs) for rear support brace bolt(s).

Step 6: Reconnect the alternator wiring

  • Push the alternator electrical connector in until it clicks.
  • Install the B+ cable onto the power stud, then install the nut using a 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 15 NĀ·m (11 ft-lbs) for the B+ terminal nut.
  • Reinstall the protective cap over the power stud.

Step 7: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to the diagram/photo, leaving the alternator pulley for last if it’s easiest.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8" drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove.

Step 8: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten securely: Torque to 15 NĀ·m (11 ft-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 10–15 seconds to confirm it runs smooth (no wobble, no chirping).
  • Verify the battery/charging light on the dash goes out.
  • If you have a multimeter: with engine running, check battery voltage—typically ~13.5–14.8V.
  • Recheck the B+ nut and mounting bolts after a short test drive.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
