🔧 Alternator - Replacement

The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. On your Silverado, replacement is straightforward but tight around the belt drive and electrical connections, so take your time and keep the battery disconnected.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The alternator has direct battery power.
  • Let the engine cool completely before working near the belt and pulleys.
  • Keep hands, tools, and clothing clear of the serpentine belt path.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the truck. Never rely on the jack alone.
  • If your truck has a battery sensor or heavy cable at the alternator, avoid forcing connectors.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 1/2-inch breaker bar
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Alternator mounting bolts - Qty: 1 set
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing before removal.
  • Label connectors before removing them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect battery power

  • Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery terminal.

Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay or leave it routed if only the alternator is being swapped and the belt is in good condition.

Step 3: Unplug the alternator

  • Use your fingers or a small flat-blade trim tool to release the electrical connector.
  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the main battery cable nut from the alternator stud.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot short to ground.

Step 4: Remove the alternator

  • Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.

Step 5: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator in place.
  • Install the mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the alternator bolts. Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the main battery cable with a 13mm socket. Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical plug until it clicks.

Step 6: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Route the belt correctly over all pulleys, then release the tensioner slowly.
  • Check that the belt sits fully in every pulley groove.

Step 7: Restore battery power

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
  • Tighten it snugly. Do not overtighten the battery terminal bolt.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for smooth tracking.
  • Check the battery warning light on the dash. It should go out after startup.
  • Use a multimeter at the battery terminals. Charging voltage should typically be about 13.5-14.8 volts with the engine running.
  • Listen for belt squeal, rubbing, or bearing noise.
  • Check that all electrical accessories work normally.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
