🔧 Alternator - Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. If it’s failing, you may see a battery warning light, dim lights, or a dead battery even after a jump start.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. This prevents accidental short circuits.
- The alternator wiring is always hot if the battery is connected. Do not let tools touch the positive terminal and metal at the same time.
- Keep hands clear of the belt, pulleys, and fan area.
- Use jack stands only if you lift the truck. Do not work under a vehicle supported by a jack alone.
- Let the engine cool first.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- If the belt is worn, replace it now while access is open.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect battery power
- Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake duct if equipped
- If your Silverado has a plastic engine cover or intake duct in the way, remove it first.
- Use a flat trim tool for clips and a 10mm socket for fasteners.
- Set the parts aside in order.
Step 3: Release belt tension
- Locate the serpentine belt tensioner at the front of the engine.
- Use a serpentine belt tool or 15mm wrench to rotate the tensioner clockwise and relieve belt tension.
- Route a photo before removing.
- Slip the belt off the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
Step 4: Remove the alternator electrical connections
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the main power cable nut from the back of the alternator.
- Remove the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
- If the connector is damaged, plan to replace the pigtail.
Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Use a 15mm socket, ratchet, and extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand as you remove the last bolt.
- Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
Step 6: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator in place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
- Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts.
- Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect the wiring
- Reconnect the main power cable on the alternator stud.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the nut.
- Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the electrical plug until it clicks into place.
Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt back over all pulleys using your photo as a guide.
- Use the serpentine belt tool or 15mm wrench to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt fully onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Make sure the belt sits centered in every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reinstall removed components
- Reinstall any intake duct, cover, or clips removed earlier.
- Use the 10mm socket and flat trim tool as needed.
Step 10: Reconnect battery and test
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- Start the engine and watch the battery warning light.
- Listen for belt squeal or grinding from the alternator area.
- Check charging voltage if you have a meter. Normal running voltage is usually around 13.5-14.8 volts.
✅ After Repair
- Verify the battery light stays off with the engine running.
- Turn on headlights, blower fan, and rear defogger to confirm charging under load.
- Recheck belt alignment after a short test drive.
- If the battery was deeply discharged, have it tested before trusting it.
