🔧 Focus - A/C Compressor Replacement

Your Focus’s A/C compressor is the pump that circulates refrigerant and oil through the A/C system. Replacing it is a mechanical job plus an A/C service job (recover refrigerant, pull vacuum, and recharge).

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Refrigerant must be professionally recovered before any lines are opened.
  • ⚠️ Do not vent refrigerant to the air; it’s illegal and can cause frostbite.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves; liquid refrigerant can freeze skin/eyes.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands/tools clear of the belt drive; it can start unexpectedly if the engine is hot and fans cycle.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the exhaust/manifold area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 1/2" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10–80 ft-lbs range)
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Socket set (8mm–15mm)
  • Torx bit set (T20–T30)
  • Flat trim tool
  • Pick tool set
  • A/C manifold gauge set (specialty)
  • Vacuum pump (specialty)
  • Refrigerant recovery machine (specialty)
  • Electronic refrigerant scale (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • A/C compressor - Qty: 1
  • A/C compressor O-ring kit - Qty: 1
  • Receiver/drier or accumulator (if serviced separately on your Focus) - Qty: 1
  • Refrigerant (type/charge per underhood label) - Qty: 1
  • A/C compressor oil (type/amount per underhood label) - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt (optional if cracked/glazed) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and locate the underhood A/C charge label (it lists refrigerant type and exact charge amount).
  • Arrange refrigerant recovery: either you have recovery equipment, or a shop recovers it before you continue.
  • Important: I’ll give exact recharge guidance after you tell me what the label says.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm refrigerant type and plan the recovery

  • Use a flashlight and read the underhood A/C label; note whether it lists R-134a or R-1234yf and the exact charge amount.
  • If you do not have a refrigerant recovery machine (specialty), schedule a shop to recover the refrigerant first, then drive home with the A/C off and proceed with the mechanical steps.

Step 2: Lift and access the compressor area

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove any lower splash shield/undertray fasteners using your socket set (8mm–15mm) and Torx bit set (T20–T30) (fastener types vary by shield).

Step 3: Remove belt tension from the A/C compressor

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the belt tensioner and slip the belt off the compressor pulley.
  • Take a photo of belt routing first.

Step 4: Disconnect the compressor electrical connector

  • Use a pick tool set to gently release the connector lock (if equipped), then unplug the compressor connector by hand.

Step 5: Remove the refrigerant lines from the compressor (ONLY after recovery)

  • After the system is fully recovered, use your socket set (8mm–15mm) to remove the A/C line retaining bolt(s) at the compressor manifold.
  • Pull the lines straight off and remove old O-rings using a pick tool set.
  • Install new O-rings from the A/C compressor O-ring kit (lightly oil them with the correct A/C oil before assembly).

Step 6: Remove the compressor

  • Support the compressor with one hand and remove the mounting bolts using a socket set (8mm–15mm) and ratchet.
  • Lower the compressor out carefully without bending A/C lines or stressing wiring.

Step 7: Install the new compressor

  • Position the new compressor and start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten mounting bolts evenly using a torque wrench (10–80 ft-lbs range) to the factory spec for your Focus compressor bracket/bolt set.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector by hand until it clicks.

Step 8: Reconnect A/C lines

  • Push the lines straight onto the compressor manifold (do not force or twist).
  • Install the line retaining bolt(s) using a socket set (8mm–15mm), then tighten with a torque wrench (10–80 ft-lbs range) to the factory spec.

Step 9: Reinstall the belt and shields

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to reinstall the belt and confirm it’s seated in every pulley groove.
  • Reinstall the splash shield/undertray using your socket set (8mm–15mm) and Torx bit set (T20–T30).

Step 10: Evacuate and recharge the A/C system

  • Connect a A/C manifold gauge set (specialty) and pull vacuum using a vacuum pump (specialty).
  • Recharge by weight using an electronic refrigerant scale (specialty) with the exact refrigerant type and amount from the underhood label.
  • If you replaced a major component, add the correct oil type/amount listed for your Focus (from the label/service spec) before charging.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn A/C on MAX; verify the compressor engages and vent temps drop.
  • Check for leaks at the compressor line connections (a UV dye check is best if you have dye in the system).
  • Listen for belt squeal or rubbing; recheck belt seating if any noise appears.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $900-$1,700 (parts + labor + refrigerant service)

DIY Cost: $250-$750 (parts only, assuming you have A/C equipment)

You Save: $650-$950 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2.5-4.5 hours.

🎯 Ready to get started?

Reply with (1) what the underhood A/C label says for refrigerant type and charge amount, and (2) whether you’ll have a shop recover/recharge or you have A/C recovery equipment. Then I’ll tailor the exact recharge/oil details and the correct torque specs for your Focus.
