🔧 AC Compressor - Replacement

The A/C compressor sits low on the engine and is driven by the belt. On your Equinox, the system must be professionally recovered before opening the refrigerant lines, then the compressor, seals, and correct oil charge must be installed. If the compressor failed internally, you also need to flush the system and replace the receiver/drier or accumulator if equipped.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Refrigerant can cause severe frostbite. The system must be recovered with approved equipment before disconnecting any A/C line.
  • Do not vent refrigerant to the air.
  • Battery disconnect is recommended before working near the belt drive and compressor connector.
  • Support the vehicle securely if you need access from below. Use jack stands on solid ground.
  • Keep dirt out of the open A/C lines. Cap every line immediately after removal.
  • Assumption: factory A/C system with electronically controlled compressor and R-1234yf refrigerant.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before starting.
  • Have the refrigerant recovered by approved equipment before opening the system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the compressor connector or belt.
  • Keep all new seals lubricated with the correct compressor oil before installation.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect power

  • Use a refrigerant recovery machine (specialty) to empty the A/C system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Do not skip refrigerant recovery.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake access parts

  • Remove the engine cover by hand.
  • If needed for access, remove the intake ducting with a trim clip removal tool and 8mm socket.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to relieve tension from the belt tensioner.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Replace the belt if it is cracked, glazed, or oil-soaked.

Step 4: Disconnect the compressor electrical connector

  • Release the compressor connector lock by hand.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor.
  • Inspect the connector for corrosion or melted terminals.

Step 5: Remove the refrigerant lines

  • Place a drain pan below the compressor area.
  • Use a line wrench set to loosen the A/C line fittings.
  • Cap the open lines immediately after removal.
  • Remove and discard the old O-rings.

Step 6: Remove the compressor mounting bolts

  • Support the compressor with one hand while removing the bolts with a metric socket set.
  • Lower the compressor out carefully.
  • Keep fingers clear of pinch points.

Step 7: Prepare the replacement compressor

  • Compare the new compressor to the old one before installation.
  • Add the correct amount of compressor oil to the new unit if it is not pre-filled.
  • Lube all new O-rings with clean compressor oil.

Step 8: Install the new compressor

  • Position the new compressor in place by hand.
  • Install the mounting bolts finger-tight first with a metric socket set.
  • Tighten the compressor mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Start all bolts by hand first.

Step 9: Reconnect the refrigerant lines

  • Install the new O-rings on the line fittings.
  • Reattach the refrigerant lines with a line wrench set.
  • Tighten the line fittings snugly to the factory spec for the fitting style.

Step 10: Reinstall the belt and reconnect the electrical connector

  • Reconnect the compressor electrical connector by hand.
  • Route the serpentine belt using the belt routing diagram.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to load the tensioner and seat the belt fully.
  • Make sure the belt is centered on every pulley.

Step 11: Reassemble and evacuate the system

  • Reinstall any intake parts and the engine cover.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Use a vacuum pump (specialty) to evacuate the A/C system.
  • Hold vacuum and check for leaks before charging.

Step 12: Recharge and test

  • Charge the system with the correct refrigerant amount using a manifold gauge set for R-1234yf (specialty).
  • Start the engine and turn the A/C on MAX.
  • Check vent temperature, compressor engagement, and line temperatures.
  • Inspect all fittings for leaks.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify cold air output at idle and with the blower on high.
  • Listen for belt noise or compressor knocking.
  • Recheck refrigerant fittings after the first drive.
  • If the old compressor failed internally, plan on flushing the system and replacing contaminated components.
