How to Replace the A/C Compressor on a 2018-2020 Chevrolet Equinox (Engine: Inline 4 2.0L)
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, torque specs, safety tips, and recharge steps for 2018, 2019, 2020
🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement
The A/C compressor on your Equinox circulates refrigerant through the system. If it has seized, is noisy, or is leaking oil/refrigerant, the compressor must be replaced and the system must be evacuated and recharged properly.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Have the refrigerant recovered by an A/C shop before opening the system. Refrigerant is under high pressure and can cause frostbite.
- Do not vent refrigerant to the air.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting work.
- Keep dirt out of the A/C lines. Open lines can ruin the new compressor.
- If the compressor failed internally, flush contaminated lines and replace the receiver/drier or desiccant service part if equipped with the replacement setup.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves the entire time.

- Receiver/drier or desiccant service component - Qty: 1, if required by contamination or line opening
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Recover the refrigerant before loosening any A/C line.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands if needed for access.
- Keep caps or clean tape ready to cover open refrigerant lines immediately.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect battery
- Have the refrigerant recovered using an A/C recovery machine.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- Never crack a line before recovery.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake parts blocking access
- Remove the engine cover by hand.
- Use a metric socket set and trim tool set to remove any intake ducting or air box pieces blocking compressor access.
- Set all clips and fasteners aside in order.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the belt tensioner.
- Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine.
- Inspect the belt now. Replace it if cracked or glazed.
Step 4: Disconnect the A/C lines from the compressor
- Use a line wrench set to loosen the refrigerant line bolts.
- Remove the lines carefully and cap both openings immediately.
- Replace the old O-rings with new ones lubricated with the correct refrigerant oil.
- Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs) on reassembly.
Step 5: Remove the compressor
- Use a metric socket set and ratchet with extensions to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Support the compressor with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Lower the compressor out of the engine bay.
- Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs) for compressor mounting bolts on installation.
Step 6: Prepare the new compressor
- Compare the new compressor to the old one before installation.
- Drain and measure any oil from the old unit if required.
- Add the correct amount of compatible refrigerant oil to the new compressor.
- Rotate the compressor hub by hand a few turns to distribute oil.
- Keep the new unit capped until install.
Step 7: Install the new compressor
- Lift the new compressor into place.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand before tightening.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the compressor bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the A/C lines
- Install new lubricated O-rings on the line fittings.
- Connect the lines and start the bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a line wrench set to tighten the line bolts to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the belt and intake parts
- Route the serpentine belt using the factory belt path.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to move the tensioner and slip the belt into place.
- Reinstall the intake ducting and engine cover using the metric socket set and by hand.
Step 10: Evacuate, leak test, and recharge
- Use an A/C manifold gauge set (specialty) and vacuum pump (specialty) to evacuate the system.
- Pull vacuum and hold it to confirm there are no leaks.
- Recharge the system with the correct amount of R-1234yf refrigerant using approved equipment.
- Use the exact charge amount from the under-hood label.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and turn the A/C on MAX.
- Check that the compressor engages and the center vents begin cooling.
- Inspect all line connections for leaks with a UV dye check or electronic leak detector.
- Listen for abnormal noise from the compressor or belt.
- If cooling is weak, the system may be undercharged or there may still be air in the system.
