  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Recover the refrigerant with approved equipment before opening any AC lines.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • If the old compressor failed internally, flush the system and replace the receiver/drier or desiccant element.
  • Keep all line openings capped to prevent contamination.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect power

  • Use an approved R134a recovery machine to remove the refrigerant from the system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Do not skip refrigerant recovery.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and splash shielding if equipped

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the cover fasteners or lower shield fasteners as needed.
  • Set the panels aside in order so they go back correctly.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a belt tensioner tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt off the compressor pulley.
  • Inspect the belt. Replace it if it is cracked, glazed, or noisy.

Step 4: Disconnect the AC lines

  • Use a line wrench set to loosen the refrigerant line fittings at the compressor.
  • Remove the line bolts carefully and catch any remaining oil with a drain pan.
  • Cap the open lines and compressor ports right away.

Step 5: Unplug the compressor electrical connector

  • Release the connector lock by hand, then unplug the compressor connector.
  • Check the connector for corrosion or bent terminals.

Step 6: Remove the compressor mounting bolts

  • Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, ratchet, and extension bar to remove the compressor bolts.
  • Support the compressor as the last bolt comes out.
  • Torque on installation: 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs)

Step 7: Compare and prep the replacement compressor

  • Check that the replacement compressor matches the old one.
  • Add the correct amount of AC compressor oil before installation if the new unit is dry.
  • Install new O-rings on the line fittings and lightly coat them with clean refrigerant oil.

Step 8: Install the new compressor

  • Position the compressor in place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 14mm socket to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs)

Step 9: Reconnect the AC lines and connector

  • Install the line fittings with new O-rings using a line wrench set.
  • Torque the line bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 10: Reinstall the belt

  • Use the belt tensioner tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and route the serpentine belt correctly.
  • Double-check the belt sits in every pulley groove.

Step 11: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Use a vacuum pump (specialty) to evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes.
  • Hold vacuum and make sure it does not leak down.
  • Recharge the system with the correct amount of R134a refrigerant using a R134a recovery and recharge machine (specialty).
  • Charge by weight for best results.

Step 12: Reassemble and test

  • Reinstall any shields or covers with a 10mm socket.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and turn the AC on max. Check for cold air, unusual noise, and leaks.

  • Check vent temperature after a few minutes of idle.
  • Inspect all AC fittings for oil residue or hissing.
  • Listen for belt squeal or compressor knock.
  • If cooling is weak, recheck refrigerant charge by weight.
