🔧 Grand Cherokee - A/C Compressor Replacement
Replacing the A/C compressor on your Grand Cherokee requires recovering the refrigerant, removing the serpentine belt, disconnecting the A/C lines, replacing the compressor, then evacuating and recharging the system. This is a doable mechanical repair, but the refrigerant recovery and recharge must be done with proper A/C service equipment.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Refrigerant can cause frostbite and eye injury. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
- ⚠️ Do not vent refrigerant to the atmosphere. The system must be recovered using an A/C recovery machine.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the compressor electrical connector.
- ⚠️ The A/C system must be evacuated with a vacuum pump before recharge. Air or moisture inside the system can damage the new compressor.
- ⚠️ If the old compressor failed internally, the condenser, expansion valve, and receiver/drier or desiccant bag may also need replacement to prevent repeat failure.
- ⚠️ Never run the engine with hands near the belt, pulley, or cooling fan.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and let the engine cool completely.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Have the refrigerant professionally recovered with an A/C recovery machine R-134a before opening any A/C line.
- Check the underhood A/C label for the exact refrigerant charge amount. Use that label as the final authority.
- Take a clear photo of the serpentine belt routing before removal.
- An O-ring is a small rubber seal. Replace every opened A/C line O-ring; never reuse old ones.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant
- Connect an A/C recovery machine R-134a to the high- and low-side service ports.
- Recover the refrigerant completely before loosening any A/C fitting.
- If you do not have recovery equipment, have a shop recover the refrigerant first, then bring the vehicle home for the compressor replacement.
- Never vent refrigerant.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal.
- Move the cable away from the battery post so it cannot accidentally touch.
Step 3: Raise and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the stands and confirm it is stable before working underneath.
Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt from the Compressor Pulley
- Locate the belt tensioner at the front of the engine.
- A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
- Use a serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive or 3/8-inch ratchet to rotate the tensioner and release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner. Do not let it snap back.
- If replacing the belt, remove it fully and compare the routing with your photo.
Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector
- Find the electrical connector on the A/C compressor clutch.
- Press the locking tab by hand and unplug the connector.
- If a wiring retainer is clipped nearby, release it carefully by hand or with an O-ring pick tool.
Step 6: Disconnect the A/C Lines from the Compressor
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon under the compressor area to catch small oil drips.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the A/C line manifold bolt from the compressor.
- Gently pull the A/C line block away from the compressor.
- Use an O-ring pick tool to remove the old O-rings from the line fittings.
- Cap or cover the open A/C lines immediately to keep dirt and moisture out.
- During installation, use new O-rings lightly coated with clean PAG 46 A/C compressor oil.
- Torque the A/C line manifold bolt to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Remove the A/C Compressor Mounting Bolts
- Support the compressor with one hand before removing the last bolt.
- Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Lower the compressor out carefully from underneath.
- Keep the old compressor level so you can drain and measure the oil.
Step 8: Balance the Compressor Oil
- Drain the oil from the old compressor into a clean measuring container.
- Rotate the old compressor hub by hand several turns to help drain the oil.
- Drain the shipping oil from the new compressor into a clean container.
- Add back the same amount of clean PAG 46 A/C compressor oil that came out of the old compressor unless the compressor supplier gives a different instruction.
- If the old compressor came apart internally or the system was flushed, follow the component oil amount procedure from the compressor supplier.
- Too much oil reduces cooling.
Step 9: Install the New Compressor
- Position the new A/C compressor with clutch into place by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 5-75 ft-lbs and torque compressor mounting bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the A/C Lines
- Install new O-rings from the A/C compressor line O-ring seal kit.
- Lightly coat each O-ring with clean PAG 46 A/C compressor oil.
- Push the A/C line block squarely onto the compressor ports.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to install the line manifold bolt.
- Use a torque wrench 5-75 ft-lbs and torque to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Compressor Connector
- Plug the compressor electrical connector in by hand until it clicks.
- Make sure the wiring is routed away from the belt and compressor pulley.
Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt according to your photo or the belt routing decal.
- Use the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive or 3/8-inch ratchet to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt over the final pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.
- Misrouted belts shred quickly.
Step 13: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Tighten the terminal until it cannot rotate by hand.
Step 14: Evacuate the A/C System
- Connect an A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to the high- and low-side service ports.
- Connect an A/C vacuum pump 2-stage to the manifold gauge set.
- Run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
- Close the valves and confirm the system holds vacuum for at least 10 minutes.
- If vacuum drops, stop and repair the leak before charging.
Step 15: Recharge the System by Weight
- Place the R-134a refrigerant cylinder on a refrigerant scale 0-50 lb.
- Charge the exact amount shown on the underhood A/C label.
- Start the engine, turn A/C to maximum cooling, and set blower speed high.
- Continue charging only by measured weight, not by guesswork or can pressure.
- Watch the compressor clutch and gauge readings while charging.
Step 16: Final Leak and Cooling Check
- Use the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to confirm pressures are stable.
- Check the compressor line connections for oily residue or hissing.
- Let the A/C run for several minutes and confirm cold air from the vents.
- Shut the engine off and reinstall any covers or retainers removed during access.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm the compressor clutch cycles normally and does not chatter.
- ✅ Check for cold air at the center vents with A/C on maximum cooling.
- ✅ Recheck the A/C line fittings for leaks after the first drive.
- ✅ If cooling is weak, scan the HVAC module and powertrain module for A/C request or pressure sensor faults.
- ✅ If the old compressor failed internally, replace the condenser and expansion valve before operating the new compressor for long periods.
