🔧 Grand Cherokee - A/C Compressor Replacement
Replacing the A/C compressor on your Grand Cherokee means removing the old compressor, balancing the oil, installing new sealing washers, then evacuating and recharging the A/C system by exact weight. The refrigerant must be professionally recovered before opening the system because the A/C system is pressurized.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Do not vent refrigerant. Have the R-134a recovered with an approved A/C recovery machine before loosening any A/C line.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Refrigerant can freeze skin and eyes instantly.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the compressor clutch connector.
- ⚠️ Cap open A/C lines right away. Moisture and dirt can damage the new compressor.
- ⚠️ If the old compressor failed internally, replace the condenser/receiver-drier and expansion valve before recharging.
- ⚠️ Final recharge must be done by weight using the underhood label specification.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and let the engine cool fully.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Have the A/C refrigerant recovered first. Recovery means removing refrigerant into a machine instead of releasing it into the air.
- Read the underhood A/C label and note the exact R-134a charge amount before starting.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- If the old compressor locked up, made grinding noise, or sent black/metal debris into the oil, do not just replace the compressor. Replace the condenser/receiver-drier and expansion valve too.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover The Refrigerant
- Use an A/C refrigerant recovery machine and A/C manifold gauge set to recover the R-134a from the high-side and low-side service ports.
- Confirm both gauges show no pressure before opening the system.
- Never loosen charged A/C lines.
Step 2: Disconnect The Battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal.
- Move the cable away from the battery post so it cannot touch accidentally.
Step 3: Raise The Front Of The Vehicle
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and gently shake it to confirm it is stable.
- Never work under a jack alone.
Step 4: Remove The Lower Splash Shield
- Use an 8mm socket to remove the splash shield screws.
- Use a flat trim clip tool to remove any plastic push clips.
- Remove the lower splash shield and set the fasteners aside.
Step 5: Remove Belt Tension
- Take a clear photo of the belt routing before removal.
- Use a serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive or 3/8-inch drive ratchet on the belt tensioner.
- The tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
- Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension, then slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
Step 6: Unplug The Compressor Connector
- Locate the compressor clutch electrical connector on the A/C compressor.
- Use a pick tool set only if needed to gently lift the connector lock.
- Unplug the connector by pulling on the connector body, not the wires.
Step 7: Disconnect The A/C Lines
- Place a drain pan under the compressor area.
- Use a 13mm socket or 13mm wrench to remove the compressor line retaining bolt.
- Pull the A/C line block straight away from the compressor.
- Use a pick tool set to remove the old sealing washers.
- Cap or tape the open A/C line ends immediately.
- Clean fittings prevent future leaks.
Step 8: Remove The Old Compressor
- Support the compressor with one hand.
- Use a 15mm socket and 13mm socket as needed to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Lower the compressor out through the bottom opening.
- Keep the compressor upright so you can measure the old oil.
Step 9: Balance The Compressor Oil
- Drain the old compressor oil into a clean measuring cup.
- Turn the old compressor clutch plate by hand several times to help empty it.
- Add the same amount of fresh PAG 46 A/C compressor oil to the new compressor unless the new compressor instructions say it is already filled correctly.
- Turn the new compressor clutch plate by hand 10-15 turns to spread the oil.
Step 10: Install The New Compressor
- Lift the new compressor into position by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first. This prevents cross-threading.
- Use a 15mm socket, 13mm socket, and torque wrench 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the compressor mounting bolts.
- Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect The A/C Lines
- Install new sealing washers from the A/C compressor sealing washer kit.
- Lightly coat the washers with clean PAG 46 A/C compressor oil.
- Push the A/C line block straight onto the compressor.
- Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the line retaining bolt.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Reconnect The Electrical Connector
- Push the compressor clutch connector on by hand until it clicks.
- Lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 13: Reinstall The Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt using your photo or the underhood routing decal.
- Use the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive or 3/8-inch drive ratchet to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt over the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Check every pulley groove to make sure the belt ribs are seated correctly.
- A misaligned belt can shred fast.
Step 14: Reinstall The Lower Splash Shield
- Position the lower splash shield by hand.
- Use an 8mm socket to reinstall the screws.
- Use a flat trim clip tool to reinstall any plastic clips.
Step 15: Lower The Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
Step 16: Reconnect The Battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Use a torque wrench 5-80 ft-lbs if available.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 17: Evacuate The System
- Connect the A/C manifold gauge set to the high-side and low-side service ports.
- Connect the A/C vacuum pump to the manifold gauge set.
- Run the vacuum pump for 30-45 minutes.
- Close the manifold valves and confirm the system holds vacuum for at least 10 minutes.
- If vacuum drops, there is a leak that must be fixed before charging.
Step 18: Recharge The A/C System
- Use a refrigerant charging scale and A/C manifold gauge set to add the exact amount of R-134a refrigerant listed on the underhood label.
- Charge through the low-side service port using the equipment instructions.
- Start the engine when required, set A/C to max cold, and use medium blower speed.
- Do not overcharge the system.
✅ After Repair
- Let your Grand Cherokee idle with the A/C on max cold.
- Listen for belt squeal, grinding, clicking, or compressor rattle.
- Check the compressor line connection for oily residue, which can indicate a refrigerant leak.
- Confirm the center vents blow cold after a few minutes.
- If the compressor does not engage, check refrigerant charge level, fuses, the clutch connector, and A/C-related fault codes with a scan tool.
