🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement

The compressor on your F-150 is the pump that moves refrigerant through the air conditioning system. Replacing it is not just a bolt-on job because the refrigerant must be recovered first, and the system should be opened only after that. On this truck, it’s also smart to replace the receiver drier/accumulator and the orifice tube at the same time so the new compressor does not get contaminated.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before opening the A/C system. Do not vent refrigerant.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Refrigerant can cause severe cold burns.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the belt drive and wiring.
  • Keep dirt out of the lines. Even small debris can damage the new compressor.
  • If the old compressor failed catastrophically, flush the system before installing parts.
  • Use the exact refrigerant type listed on the underhood label.

  • A/C compressor O-ring set - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Refrigerant - Qty: 1 system charge

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before starting.
  • Recover the refrigerant with approved equipment before opening any A/C line.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the belt or compressor.
  • Keep all A/C fittings capped until reassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect the battery

  • Use a refrigerant recovery machine to remove all refrigerant from the system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm socket.
  • Never open the A/C lines with pressure inside.

Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine.
  • If the belt is cracked or glazed, replace it now.

Step 3: Remove access components if needed

  • On 4WD models, remove any splash shields or small covers blocking access using a 10mm socket.
  • Set the hardware aside in order so it goes back in the same place.

Step 4: Disconnect the compressor

  • Unplug the electrical connector from the compressor.
  • Use a line wrench set to loosen the suction and discharge line fittings.
  • Cap the open lines right away to keep dirt and moisture out.

Step 5: Remove the compressor

  • Support the compressor with one hand while removing the mounting bolts with a 13mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lower the compressor out of the engine bay.
  • If the old unit failed hard, look for metal debris inside the ports.

Step 6: Replace the orifice tube and receiver drier/accumulator

  • Remove the old orifice tube with a pick tool.
  • Install the new orifice tube in the same direction as the old one.
  • Replace the receiver drier/accumulator using a 10mm socket if your setup uses a serviceable unit.
  • Replace all O-rings and lightly oil them with the correct A/C oil.

Step 7: Prep the new compressor

  • Drain and measure the oil from the old compressor if possible.
  • Add the correct amount of fresh A/C oil to the new compressor.
  • Rotate the compressor shaft by hand a few turns before installation.
  • Use only clean A/C oil and clean hands.

Step 8: Install the new compressor

  • Lift the compressor into place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Tighten the bolts evenly with a 13mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to factory specification for your compressor mounting bolts.
  • Reconnect the suction and discharge lines with a line wrench set.
  • Torque to factory specification for the A/C line fittings.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector.

Step 9: Reinstall the belt and covers

  • Route the serpentine belt using the belt routing label under the hood.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool to release the tensioner and slip the belt into place.
  • Reinstall any splash shields or covers with a 10mm socket.

Step 10: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Connect the manifold gauge set and vacuum pump.
  • Pull a deep vacuum for at least 30 minutes.
  • Shut the valves and make sure the system holds vacuum.
  • Recharge with the exact refrigerant amount listed on the underhood label.
  • Torque to factory specification does not apply here; charge by weight only.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the A/C to MAX.
  • Check that the compressor engages and the center vents blow cold.
  • Look for leaks at every fitting and around the compressor shaft.
  • Listen for abnormal noise or belt squeal.
  • If cooling is weak, confirm the charge amount and check for trapped air or a leak.
