🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement
Your A/C compressor pumps refrigerant through the system. If it has seized, leaks, or makes noise, it must be replaced and the system must be evacuated and recharged correctly afterward.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Have the refrigerant recovered by approved equipment before opening the system. Refrigerant can cause severe frostbite and eye injury.
- Do not run the A/C system with a failed compressor. Metal debris can contaminate the entire system.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the accessory drive and A/C electrical connectors.
- Keep dirt and moisture out of the open A/C lines. Cap all open fittings immediately.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves. Refrigerant oil can irritate skin and eyes.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- A/C compressor - Qty: 1
- A/C compressor oil - Qty: 1 bottle
- A/C line O-ring kit - Qty: 1
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
- Refrigerant (R-134a) - Qty: 1 system charge
- Receiver/drier or desiccant service component - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Recover the refrigerant with approved equipment before disconnecting any A/C line.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- If the compressor failed catastrophically, flush the system and replace the receiver/drier or desiccant component.
- Use only the oil type specified for the A/C system. Wrong oil can damage the compressor.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the refrigerant
- Use a refrigerant recovery machine to remove all refrigerant from the A/C system.
- Do not open any A/C lines until the system is fully recovered.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
Step 3: Remove the intake ducting if needed
- Use a 8mm socket and trim clip removal tool to remove any air ducting that blocks access to the compressor or belt path.
- Set the parts aside in order.
Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a belt tensioner tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension.
- Slip the serpentine belt off the compressor pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
- Take a quick belt routing photo first.
Step 5: Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector
- Use a pick set if needed to release the connector lock.
- Unplug the compressor connector and move the harness away from the work area.
Step 6: Disconnect the refrigerant lines
- Use a 13mm socket or the correct line fastener tool for the A/C line retaining bolts if equipped.
- Carefully separate the suction and discharge lines from the compressor.
- Remove and discard the old A/C line O-rings.
- Cap the open lines immediately.
Step 7: Remove the compressor
- Use a 13mm socket and 15mm socket with extensions to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Support the compressor as you remove the last bolt, then lower it out of the engine bay.
- If the old compressor failed hard, inspect for metal debris in the ports and lines.
Step 8: Prepare the new compressor
- Drain any shipping oil from the new compressor if required.
- Add the correct amount of fresh A/C oil to the new compressor.
- Rotate the compressor clutch/pulley by hand several turns before installation.
- Do not overfill the oil.
Step 9: Install the new compressor
- Position the new compressor and start all mounting bolts by hand.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the compressor bolts to factory specification.
- Reconnect the A/C refrigerant lines with new O-rings lightly lubricated with clean A/C oil.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the line fasteners to factory specification.
Step 10: Reinstall the belt and connectors
- Use a belt tensioner tool (specialty) to route the serpentine belt back onto all pulleys.
- Reconnect the compressor electrical connector until it clicks.
- Reinstall any intake ducting removed earlier using the 8mm socket.
Step 11: Evacuate and recharge the system
- Use a vacuum pump (specialty) and manifold A/C gauge set (specialty) to evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes.
- Verify the system holds vacuum. If it does not, check for leaks before recharging.
- Recharge the system with the correct amount of R-134a refrigerant and the correct total oil balance.
Step 12: Reconnect power and inspect
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and turn the A/C on max.
- Check for normal compressor operation, cold vent air, and any leaks at the fittings.
✅ After Repair
- Verify both A/C lines get cool and the compressor cycles normally.
- Inspect all line connections for leaks.
- Listen for belt noise or pulley wobble.
- If the old compressor failed with metal debris, consider a full system flush and replacement of the receiver/drier or desiccant component.
