📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before loosening any A/C lines.
  • If the old compressor failed hard, plan to replace the accumulator/drier and flush the system.
  • Keep all caps on until the last moment.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect battery

  • Use a refrigerant recovery machine to evacuate the system completely before opening any line.
  • Use a wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable.

Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool to relieve tension on the belt tensioner.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks, glazing, or oil contamination.

Step 3: Remove any access components

  • Use the metric socket set to remove any brackets, splash shields, or air ducts blocking the compressor.
  • Set all hardware aside in order.

Step 4: Disconnect the A/C lines and electrical connector

  • Use the A/C line disconnect tool set to release the suction and discharge lines from the compressor.
  • Cap the open lines immediately to keep moisture and dirt out.
  • Unplug the compressor electrical connector by hand or with a trim tool if needed.

Step 5: Remove the compressor

  • Use the metric socket set and ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Support the compressor as you remove the last bolt. It is heavier than it looks.
  • Lower the compressor out of the engine bay.

Step 6: Prepare the new compressor

  • Drain and measure the oil from the old compressor if the failed unit still holds oil.
  • Add the correct amount of PAG46 A/C oil to the new compressor.
  • Replace the line O-rings with new ones and lightly oil them before installation.
  • Do not overfill the compressor with oil.

Step 7: Install the new compressor

  • Position the compressor in place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the compressor bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector.
  • Reconnect the A/C lines and tighten them securely with the proper line fittings and fresh O-rings.

Step 8: Reinstall the belt and removed parts

  • Use the serpentine belt tool to route and reinstall the belt.
  • Make sure the belt is seated correctly on every pulley.
  • Reinstall any brackets, ducts, or shields with the metric socket set.

Step 9: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Use the vacuum pump and manifold gauge set to pull a deep vacuum on the system.
  • Hold vacuum and check for leaks before charging.
  • Recharge the system with the correct amount of R-134a refrigerant per the under-hood label.
  • Charge by weight, not by pressure alone.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the A/C to MAX cold.
  • Check that the compressor engages and the center vent air gets cold.
  • Inspect all line connections for leaks with a leak detector or UV light if available.
  • Listen for abnormal compressor noise or belt squeal.
  • If cooling is weak, the system may still have air, a leak, or a blockage.
