🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement
Your A/C compressor is the main pump that moves refrigerant through the system. When it fails, you can lose cooling, get belt noise, or end up with metal contamination inside the A/C system. This job requires refrigerant recovery before any parts come apart.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- The A/C system must be professionally evacuated and recovered before opening any lines. Do not vent refrigerant.
- Refrigerant can cause severe frostbite and eye injury. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
- Keep dirt out of the open A/C lines. Contamination can damage the new compressor.
- If the old compressor failed internally or seized, the condenser and expansion valve/orifice tube may also need replacement and the system may need flushing.
- Battery disconnect is recommended before working near the belt drive and electrical connectors.

- A/C refrigerant oil - Qty: 1 bottle
- R-134a refrigerant - Qty: 1 system charge
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before starting.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- If the old compressor seized or made metal, plan on replacing the accumulator and flushing the lines.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect power
- Have the A/C refrigerant recovered by approved equipment before opening the system.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Take a quick photo of belt routing.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting if needed
- Use an 8mm socket to loosen any clamps and fasteners holding the intake ducting in place.
- Remove the engine cover if it blocks access to the compressor or belt routing.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 15mm socket to rotate the belt tensioner.
- Slip the belt off the A/C compressor pulley and then remove it from the engine.
- Inspect the belt for cracks or glazing. Replace it if worn.
Step 4: Unplug the compressor and disconnect the refrigerant lines
- Use your fingers or a small pick to release the electrical connector on the compressor.
- Use a 10mm socket or line wrench set to remove the refrigerant line fasteners, if equipped.
- Cap the open lines right away to keep dirt and moisture out.
Step 5: Remove the compressor
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch extension to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Support the compressor with one hand while removing the last bolt.
- Lower the compressor out of the vehicle carefully.
- Tighten compressor mounting bolts to factory specification for your F-150 service data.
Step 6: Prepare the new compressor
- Drain and measure any oil from the old compressor if it contains oil.
- Add the correct amount of fresh A/C refrigerant oil to the new compressor.
- Install new O-rings on the refrigerant line connections and lightly coat them with clean refrigerant oil.
- Clean oil on O-rings helps sealing.
Step 7: Install the new compressor
- Position the compressor in place by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket to start all mounting bolts by hand first.
- Tighten the bolts evenly with a torque wrench to factory specification.
- Reconnect the electrical connector.
- Reattach the refrigerant lines and torque the fittings to factory specification.
Step 8: Reinstall the belt and intake parts
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 15mm socket to move the tensioner again.
- Route the belt exactly as before and make sure it sits fully in every pulley groove.
- Reinstall the intake ducting and engine cover using an 8mm socket.
Step 9: Evacuate, leak test, and recharge the system
- Have the system evacuated with a vacuum pump and checked for leaks.
- Recharge with the exact refrigerant amount listed on the under-hood label.
- Add oil only in the amount required for the replaced parts.
- Torque service port caps to snug hand-tight only.
✅ After Repair
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and turn the A/C on MAX.
- Check that the compressor engages and the center vents get cold.
- Listen for belt noise, clicking, or rubbing.
- Inspect all fittings for leaks.
- If cooling is weak, recheck refrigerant charge and system pressures.
