🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement

The A/C compressor on your Equinox is part of the sealed refrigerant system, so the refrigerant must be professionally recovered before removal. After the new compressor is installed, the system must be evacuated, leak-checked, and recharged with the exact refrigerant amount.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Refrigerant can cause severe cold burns. Do not loosen any A/C line until the system has been recovered.
  • The system must be evacuated with an A/C recovery machine. Do not vent refrigerant to the air.
  • Keep fingers clear of the belt drive and radiator fans.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting work.
  • Use eye protection and gloves throughout the repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket

  • Line wrench set
  • A/C manifold gauge set (specialty)
  • Vacuum pump (specialty)
  • Refrigerant recovery/recharge machine (specialty)
  • Drain pan
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Jack and jack stands

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • A/C compressor - Qty: 1
  • A/C compressor clutch relay - Qty: 1
  • A/C compressor seal kit - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • A/C system refrigerant - Qty: 1 service charge
  • Compressor oil - Qty: 1 service amount
  • O-rings - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before opening the system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing before removal.
  • Replace the compressor clutch relay if the old compressor failed electrically or seized.
  • Assumption: the A/C system is empty and ready for component replacement.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect power

  • Use a refrigerant recovery machine to evacuate the A/C system completely.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Never open the system before recovery.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and splash shields

  • Use a trim panel tool and 10mm socket to remove any upper cover and lower shield fasteners needed for access.
  • Set all clips aside so they do not get lost.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar to relieve tension from the belt tensioner.
  • Slide the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Check belt condition before reuse.

Step 4: Disconnect the compressor lines

  • Use a line wrench set to loosen the A/C line fittings at the compressor.
  • Cap or cover the open lines right away to keep dirt and moisture out.
  • Remove the old O-rings from the fittings.

Step 5: Remove the compressor

  • Use a 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Support the compressor with one hand as you remove the last bolt.
  • Lift the compressor out of the engine bay.

Step 6: Prepare and install the new compressor

  • Add the correct amount of compressor oil to the new unit if it is not prefilled.
  • Install new lubricated O-rings on the refrigerant line fittings.
  • Set the new compressor in place and install the mounting bolts by hand.
  • Torque the compressor mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect refrigerant lines

  • Use a line wrench set to tighten the refrigerant fittings.
  • Torque the line fittings to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • Make sure the lines sit flat and the O-rings are not pinched.

Step 8: Reinstall the belt and covers

  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to route and install the belt.
  • Make sure the belt is centered on every pulley.
  • Reinstall any shields or covers with the 10mm socket and trim panel tool.

Step 9: Evacuate, leak-check, and recharge

  • Use a vacuum pump (specialty) and A/C manifold gauge set (specialty) to pull a deep vacuum on the system.
  • Hold vacuum to confirm there are no leaks.
  • Recharge the system with the exact factory refrigerant amount using a refrigerant recovery/recharge machine (specialty).

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Start the engine and turn the A/C on MAX.
  • Check for cold air from the vents and listen for unusual compressor noise.
  • Inspect all line fittings for leaks with a leak detector or soap solution.
  • If cooling is weak, the charge amount or a leak check needs to be rechecked.
