🔧 AC Compressor - Replacement

The A/C compressor on your Ram is part of the refrigerant circuit, so the system must be properly recovered before anything is disconnected. After the new compressor is installed, the system needs the correct oil amount, new seals, evacuation, and recharge to avoid damage and poor cooling.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • The refrigerant must be recovered by proper equipment before opening the A/C system. Do not vent refrigerant.
  • The compressor can contain pressurized oil and refrigerant residue. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
  • Keep dirt out of the A/C lines. Even small contamination can damage the new compressor.
  • Replace the receiver/drier or accumulator if the system has been open for a long time or the old compressor failed internally.
  • Use the correct refrigerant oil type and amount for your Ram. Incorrect oil can damage the system.
  • Battery disconnect is recommended before unplugging the compressor and working near the belt drive.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • AC compressor - Qty: 1
  • AC compressor clutch coil seal kit - Qty: 1
  • Receiver/drier or accumulator - Qty: 1
  • O-ring seal kit for AC lines - Qty: 1
  • Refrigerant oil (PAG, correct spec for system) - Qty: 1 bottle
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • R-134a refrigerant - Qty: 1 full charge

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
  • Have the refrigerant recovered by an A/C recovery machine before opening the system.
  • Replace the receiver/drier or accumulator if your system has been open or the compressor failed badly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the refrigerant

  • Use a refrigerant recovery machine to evacuate the A/C system completely.
  • Do not loosen any A/C lines until the system is empty.
  • Never vent refrigerant to air.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a belt tensioner tool to relieve tension on the belt.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine.
  • If the belt is cracked or glazed, replace it now.

Step 4: Access the compressor

  • Use a 13mm socket and trim clip tool to remove any lower splash shields or covers blocking access.
  • Set the panels aside in order so they go back in the same place.

Step 5: Disconnect the electrical connector

  • Use your fingers or a small pick to release the compressor electrical connector.
  • Inspect the connector for corrosion or oil contamination.

Step 6: Disconnect the refrigerant lines

  • Use a line wrench set to remove the A/C line fittings from the compressor.
  • Cap or cover both open lines immediately to keep dirt out.
  • Replace the O-rings with new ones lubricated with clean refrigerant oil.

Step 7: Remove the compressor

  • Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Support the compressor with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Remove the compressor from the engine bay.
  • Torque on installation: tighten compressor mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Prepare the new compressor

  • Compare the new compressor to the old one before installing it.
  • Drain and measure the oil from the old compressor if possible.
  • Add the correct amount of new PAG oil to the replacement compressor.
  • Match the oil type exactly.

Step 9: Install the new compressor

  • Position the new compressor in place.
  • Use a 15mm socket to install the mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect the A/C lines and connector

  • Install new lubricated O-rings on the A/C line fittings.
  • Use a line wrench set to tighten the line fittings snugly.
  • Torque refrigerant line fittings to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the compressor electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 11: Install the belt and covers

  • Use the belt tensioner tool to reinstall the serpentine belt.
  • Make sure the belt is seated correctly on every pulley.
  • Reinstall any splash shields using a 13mm socket and trim clip tool.

Step 12: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Use a vacuum pump and manifold gauge set to evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes.
  • Hold vacuum and confirm there is no major leak.
  • Recharge the system with the exact refrigerant amount listed on the under-hood label.
  • Do not guess the charge amount.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the A/C to MAX.
  • Check that the compressor engages smoothly.
  • Verify cold air from the vents.
  • Look for refrigerant leaks at the line connections and compressor body.
  • Listen for belt noise or compressor knocking.
  • If the old compressor failed internally, monitor the system closely and replace the expansion valve if contamination is found.
