🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement

The A/C compressor on your CX-5 is part of a sealed refrigerant system, so the refrigerant must be recovered before any lines are opened. After the compressor is replaced, the system must be evacuated, recharged, and leak-checked to avoid damage and poor cooling.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before opening the A/C system.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Refrigerant can freeze skin instantly.
  • Do not run the A/C system dry after replacement. Add the correct compressor oil amount before installation.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The compressor and belt area are close to moving parts.
  • Use jack stands if you need access from below. Never rely on a floor jack alone.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Serpentine belt tool
  • Line wrench set
  • Trim clip tool
  • Drain pan
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Refrigerant recovery machine (specialty)
  • Vacuum pump (specialty)
  • A/C manifold gauge set (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • A/C compressor - Qty: 1
  • A/C compressor oil - Qty: 1 bottle
  • A/C compressor O-rings - Qty: 2
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • A/C receiver drier or desiccant element - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Recover the refrigerant before opening any A/C lines.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle only if needed for lower access, then support it with jack stands.
  • Keep dirt out of the A/C lines. Cap every open port right away.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the refrigerant

  • Use a refrigerant recovery machine (specialty) to remove all refrigerant from the system.
  • Do not loosen any A/C line fittings until recovery is complete.

Step 2: Disconnect battery and gain access

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Remove the engine cover and any upper intake or splash shields that block access, using a 10mm socket and trim clip tool as needed.
  • Keep fasteners organized.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool to rotate the belt tensioner and relieve tension.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Inspect the belt now. Replace it if cracked, shiny, or stretched.

Step 4: Disconnect compressor electrical connector and lines

  • Unplug the compressor electrical connector by hand.
  • Use a line wrench set to loosen the A/C refrigerant line fittings.
  • Remove the lines carefully and immediately cap or plug the openings.
  • Replace the old O-rings with new ones lightly coated in compressor oil.

Step 5: Remove the compressor

  • Use a 12mm socket and 14mm socket to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Support the compressor with one hand as you remove the final bolt.
  • Lower the compressor out of the engine bay.

Step 6: Prepare the replacement compressor

  • Drain and measure the oil from the old compressor if possible.
  • Add the correct amount of new A/C compressor oil to the replacement unit. The oil amount must match the system specification for this compressor service.
  • Do not overfill the compressor.

Step 7: Install the new compressor

  • Position the compressor in place by hand.
  • Install the mounting bolts first by hand, then tighten them with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to factory specification for the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Reconnect the refrigerant lines with new O-rings and tighten the fittings with a line wrench set.
  • Torque to factory specification for the A/C line fittings.
  • Reconnect the compressor electrical connector.

Step 8: Reinstall belt and removed parts

  • Install the serpentine belt using the serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
  • Make sure the belt is routed correctly on every pulley.
  • Reinstall all covers, shields, and the engine cover with a 10mm socket and trim clip tool.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

Step 9: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Use a vacuum pump (specialty) and A/C manifold gauge set (specialty) to evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes.
  • Verify the system holds vacuum before recharging.
  • Recharge the system with the exact refrigerant amount listed for your CX-5.
  • Torque to factory specification for any service port caps if removed.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the A/C on MAX.
  • Check that the compressor engages smoothly and the center vents get cold.
  • Inspect all line connections for leaks.
  • Listen for abnormal noise from the belt or compressor pulley.
  • If cooling is weak, recheck refrigerant charge and leak-test the system.
