🔧 AC Compressor - Replacement

The AC compressor on your Rogue is part of the sealed refrigerant system, so the refrigerant must be recovered before any lines are opened. After the compressor is replaced, the system must be evacuated and recharged to the correct amount to avoid damage and poor cooling.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Refrigerant can cause frostbite and eye injury. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before starting. Do not vent refrigerant.
  • Keep hands clear of the serpentine belt path and pulleys.
  • Battery disconnect is recommended before working near the accessory drive and connectors.
  • Use only the exact oil type and refrigerant amount specified for the AC system.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Metric socket set
  • Metric wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Serpentine belt tool or long-handled wrench
  • Line wrench set
  • Trim clip tool
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Jack and jack stands
  • AC manifold gauge set (specialty)
  • Vacuum pump (specialty)
  • Refrigerant recovery machine (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • AC compressor - Qty: 1
  • AC compressor clutch seal kit - Qty: 1
  • AC compressor O-ring set - Qty: 1
  • Receiver drier / desiccant kit - Qty: 1
  • AC compressor oil - Qty: 1 bottle
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • R-134a refrigerant - Qty: 1 system fill

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Recover the refrigerant with approved equipment before disconnecting any AC line.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the compressor.
  • Replace the receiver drier any time the system is opened.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the refrigerant

  • Use a refrigerant recovery machine (specialty) to remove all refrigerant from the system.
  • Do not open any lines until the system is fully empty.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Set the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.

Step 3: Remove the engine cover and access components

  • Use your hands or a trim clip tool if needed to remove any covers blocking access.
  • Remove any intake ducting or splash shields that prevent access to the compressor.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool or long-handled wrench to release belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing first.

Step 5: Disconnect the compressor electrical connector

  • Unplug the compressor connector by hand.
  • Inspect the connector for corrosion or oil contamination.

Step 6: Remove the refrigerant lines

  • Use a line wrench set to remove the AC line fittings from the compressor.
  • Cap or cover the open lines right away to keep dirt and moisture out.
  • Replace the O-rings with new ones lubricated with clean AC oil.

Step 7: Remove the compressor

  • Use a metric socket set and ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Support the compressor as you remove the last bolt.
  • Lower it out carefully.

Step 8: Prepare the new compressor

  • Drain and measure the oil from the old compressor if possible.
  • Add the correct amount of new AC compressor oil to the new compressor.
  • Install new O-rings on the line connections and lightly coat them with AC oil.

Step 9: Install the new compressor

  • Position the new compressor and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to Torque to 25-30 Nm (18-22 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the refrigerant lines and tighten the fittings to Torque to 20-25 Nm (15-18 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector.

Step 10: Reinstall the belt and removed parts

  • Use a serpentine belt tool or long-handled wrench to reinstall the belt on the correct routing path.
  • Reinstall any ducting, covers, or splash shields you removed.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

Step 11: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Use an AC manifold gauge set (specialty) and vacuum pump (specialty) to evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes.
  • Verify the system holds vacuum before recharging.
  • Recharge with the exact refrigerant amount specified for your Rogue.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the AC on max.
  • Check for cold air, unusual noises, and leaks at the compressor fittings.
  • Verify the compressor cycles normally and the belt runs true.
  • If cooling is weak, recheck refrigerant charge with gauge set.
  • Listen for squealing or grinding right away.
