🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement

On your Rogue, the A/C compressor is part of a sealed refrigerant system, so the refrigerant must be recovered before any lines are opened. After the compressor is replaced, the system must be evacuated and recharged by weight so it cools correctly and the new compressor is protected.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before starting. Do not vent refrigerant to the air.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Refrigerant can cause severe frostbite.
  • Battery disconnect is recommended before starting work near the belt and compressor wiring.
  • Use caution around the serpentine belt and fan area. Keep hands clear.
  • Replace the compressor only after diagnosing the root cause. If the old compressor failed internally, the system may also need the receiver/drier and a full flush.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Long extension
  • Serpentine belt tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Trim clip tool
  • Drain pan
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • A/C compressor - Qty: 1
  • A/C compressor O-ring set - Qty: 1
  • Engine oil - Qty: 1 small bottle for compressor pre-lube if required
  • A/C compressor oil - Qty: 1 bottle
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1, replace if worn

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before opening the A/C system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the compressor.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle safely if you need access from below.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect the battery

  • Use A/C recovery equipment to evacuate the refrigerant from the system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Never open the system with refrigerant inside.

Step 2: Remove the engine undershield if equipped

  • Use a 10mm socket and trim clip tool to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
  • Set the shield aside for reinstallation.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool to relieve tension from the belt tensioner.
  • Slide the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine.
  • If the belt is cracked, glazed, or noisy, replace it now.

Step 4: Disconnect the compressor electrical connector

  • Unplug the compressor connector by hand.
  • Check the connector for oil, corrosion, or damaged terminals.

Step 5: Disconnect the refrigerant lines

  • Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket if required by the line bracket or fitting hardware.
  • Remove the line retaining bolts carefully and pull the lines away from the compressor.
  • Cap the open lines immediately to keep dirt and moisture out.
  • Replace the O-rings with new ones lubricated with clean A/C oil.

Step 6: Remove the compressor mounting bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket, ratchet, and long extension to remove the compressor bolts.
  • Support the compressor with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Lift the compressor out of the engine bay from below or above, depending on access.

Step 7: Prepare the replacement compressor

  • Compare the new compressor to the old one before installation.
  • Add the correct amount of A/C compressor oil to the new unit if it is shipped dry.
  • Rotate the clutch hub by hand a few turns to distribute oil.
  • Keep dirt out of every open fitting.

Step 8: Install the new compressor

  • Position the compressor in place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Tighten the compressor bolts with a 14mm socket and torque wrench to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the refrigerant lines with new O-rings.
  • Tighten the refrigerant line bolts with a 12mm socket to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the belt and lower shield

  • Route the serpentine belt using the factory belt path.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool to slip the belt back over the last pulley.
  • Reinstall the splash shield using a 10mm socket and trim clip tool.

Step 10: Recharge and test the system

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Evacuate the system with a vacuum pump and recharge it by weight using the correct refrigerant specification for your Rogue.
  • Start the engine and turn A/C on MAX.
  • Check for leaks at the compressor fittings.
  • Verify cold air output and listen for abnormal noise.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm the compressor clutch engages normally.
  • Check vent temperature after 10-15 minutes of operation.
  • Inspect for refrigerant leaks with UV dye or electronic leak detection.
  • If the old compressor failed internally, consider replacing the receiver/drier and flushing the system.
