🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement

Your A/C compressor sits on the front of the engine and moves refrigerant through the system. On your Sierra, the refrigerant must be recovered before removal, and the system must be evacuated and recharged after installation.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Have the refrigerant recovered by a certified A/C machine before opening the system.
  • Do not vent refrigerant to the air.
  • Keep dirt out of the A/C lines and compressor ports.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
  • Keep hands clear of the belt drive and fan area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 10mm socket

  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Line disconnect tools (A/C size set)
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Recover the refrigerant with approved A/C equipment.
  • Raise the front of the truck and support it with jack stands if needed for access.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect power

  • Use an approved A/C recovery machine to remove the refrigerant from the system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Never skip refrigerant recovery.

Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the belt tensioner.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt if you are replacing it.

Step 3: Disconnect the compressor electrical connector

  • Unplug the compressor electrical connector by hand.
  • Inspect the connector for corrosion or damaged pins.

Step 4: Disconnect the refrigerant lines

  • Use the correct line disconnect tools (A/C size set) to release the suction and discharge lines.
  • Cap or cover the open lines right away to keep dirt out.
  • Remove and discard the old O-rings.

Step 5: Remove the compressor

  • Use a 13mm socket and 15mm socket to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Lower the compressor out of the engine bay carefully.
  • Support the compressor with one hand.

Step 6: Prepare the new compressor

  • Drain and measure the oil from the old compressor if possible.
  • Add the correct amount of fresh compressor oil to the new compressor.
  • Lubricate new O-rings with clean A/C oil before installation.

Step 7: Install the new compressor

  • Position the compressor and install the mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Tighten the compressor mounting bolts with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the refrigerant lines and electrical connector

  • Install new O-rings on the refrigerant lines.
  • Reconnect the suction and discharge lines using the line disconnect tools (A/C size set) if needed.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector by hand until it clicks.

Step 9: Install the belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to release the tensioner again.
  • Route the belt correctly and make sure it sits in every pulley groove.
  • Release the tensioner slowly.

Step 10: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Use an A/C service machine to vacuum test the system.
  • Recharge with the correct refrigerant amount for your Sierra.
  • Leak test the fittings and compressor area.

Step 11: Test the repair

  • Reconnect the battery with a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and turn the A/C on MAX.
  • Check for cold air, unusual noise, and leaks.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm the compressor engages and disengages normally.
  • Verify vent temperature drops after a few minutes.
  • Inspect the compressor, hoses, and fittings for leaks.
  • Recheck belt tracking after the engine runs.
