🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement

On your Silverado, the compressor sits on the front of the engine and is driven by the belt. Replacing it means recovering the refrigerant first, removing the belt and lines, swapping the compressor, then evacuating and recharging the system with the correct oil and refrigerant.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Refrigerant must be recovered with approved equipment before any line is opened. Do not vent refrigerant.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Refrigerant can cause frostbite on contact.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the belt and electrical connectors.
  • Keep dirt out of the open A/C lines. A little contamination can damage the new compressor.
  • If the old compressor failed internally, the condenser and system may also need cleaning or replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Metric socket set
  • Metric ratchet and extensions
  • Torque wrench
  • Serpentine belt tool
  • Line wrench set
  • Pick set
  • Drain pan
  • A/C manifold gauge set (specialty)
  • Vacuum pump (specialty)
  • A/C refrigerant recovery machine (specialty)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • A/C compressor - Qty: 1
  • A/C compressor oil - Qty: 1 bottle
  • O-ring seal kit - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • R-134a refrigerant - Qty: 1 service amount

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the truck.
  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the belt or compressor connectors.
  • Label the A/C lines before removal so they go back in the correct positions.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the refrigerant

  • Use an A/C refrigerant recovery machine to remove all refrigerant from the system.
  • Do not loosen any A/C fittings until the system is empty.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool to rotate the belt tensioner.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

Step 4: Remove access components if needed

  • Use a metric socket set to remove any splash shield or intake ducting blocking access to the compressor.
  • Set the hardware aside in order so reassembly is easier.

Step 5: Disconnect the compressor electrical connector

  • Use a pick set to release the connector lock if needed.
  • Unplug the compressor connector and inspect it for corrosion or damage.

Step 6: Remove the A/C lines from the compressor

  • Use a line wrench set to loosen the refrigerant line fittings.
  • Remove the lines carefully and cap both openings right away.
  • Replace the old O-rings with new ones from the seal kit.

Step 7: Remove the compressor

  • Use a metric socket set and ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Support the compressor as you remove the last bolt because it is heavier than it looks.
  • Lift the compressor out through the top or bottom, depending on access.

Step 8: Prepare the new compressor

  • Drain and measure any oil that comes out of the old compressor.
  • Add the correct amount and type of A/C compressor oil into the new compressor.
  • Install new O-rings on the refrigerant fittings.
  • Keep the new compressor capped until install.

Step 9: Install the new compressor

  • Set the new compressor in place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use a torque wrench and metric socket set to tighten the mounting bolts.
  • Torque to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs) for the compressor mounting bolts.

Step 10: Reconnect the A/C lines and electrical connector

  • Use a line wrench set to tighten the refrigerant line fittings.
  • Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs) for the A/C line fittings.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 11: Reinstall the belt and any removed parts

  • Use the serpentine belt tool to route the belt back on the pulleys.
  • Reinstall any splash shields or intake parts using a metric socket set.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

Step 12: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Use an A/C manifold gauge set and vacuum pump to evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes.
  • Hold vacuum and check for leaks before charging.
  • Recharge the system with the exact refrigerant amount specified on the underhood label.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the A/C on max.
  • Check that the compressor engages smoothly and the air gets cold.
  • Inspect all fittings for leaks.
  • Listen for belt noise or pulley wobble.
  • If cooling is poor, the system may have air in it or a leak that still needs attention.
