🔧 AC Compressor - Replacement
The AC compressor on your RAV4 is a sealed refrigerant system component, so the refrigerant must be recovered before any parts are removed. After the new compressor is installed, the system must be evacuated and recharged to the correct specification to avoid damage and poor cooling.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before opening the system. Do not vent refrigerant to the air.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves. Refrigerant and oil can cause frostbite and eye injury.
- Do not start the engine with the AC system open.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing compressor wiring.
- Keep dirt and moisture out of open A/C lines at all times.
- Use the correct compressor oil type and exact refrigerant charge specification for your RAV4.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging compressor wiring.
- Have the new compressor oil quantity ready before installation.
- Keep every open line capped.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect power
- Use a refrigerant recovery machine to remove all refrigerant from the system.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
- Wait a few minutes before touching compressor wiring.
Step 2: Remove the engine undercover and belt
- Use a 10mm socket and trim clip tool to remove the lower engine undercover.
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to relieve tension and remove the belt.
- Inspect the belt for cracks or glazing. Replace it if worn.
Step 3: Disconnect the compressor
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the compressor electrical connector bracket or retainers.
- Use a line wrench set to loosen the refrigerant line bolts carefully.
- Remove the lines and immediately cap or plug both openings.
- Do not let moisture enter.
Step 4: Remove the compressor
- Use a 12mm socket and 14mm socket to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Support the compressor with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Lower the compressor out of the vehicle.
Step 5: Prepare and install the new compressor
- Drain and measure the oil from the old compressor if possible.
- Add the correct amount of fresh compressor oil to the new compressor before installation.
- Install new O-rings lightly coated with clean compressor oil.
- Position the new compressor and install the mounting bolts by hand first.
- Torque the compressor mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Reconnect lines and belt
- Use a line wrench set to reinstall the refrigerant lines with new O-rings.
- Torque the refrigerant line bolts to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall the serpentine belt using the serpentine belt tool (specialty).
- Make sure the belt is seated correctly on every pulley.
Step 7: Reassemble and evacuate the system
- Reinstall the engine undercover with a 10mm socket and trim clip tool.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
- Use a vacuum pump (specialty) and manifold gauge set (specialty) to evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes.
- Hold vacuum and verify there are no leaks before charging.
Step 8: Recharge and test
- Recharge the system with the exact refrigerant amount specified on the under-hood label.
- Start the engine and turn the AC on MAX.
- Check for cold air, unusual noises, and leaks at the compressor and line joints.
- Torque any accessible refrigerant service fittings to manufacturer spec if applicable.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm the AC compressor cycles normally and the air gets cold.
- Listen for belt squeal or grinding noise.
- Check all fittings for oil residue, which can point to a refrigerant leak.
- If cooling is weak, verify charge amount and inspect the condenser fan operation.
