🔧 AC Compressor - Replacement
On your RAV4, the A/C compressor sits on the engine and is driven by the serpentine belt. Replacing it means recovering the refrigerant, removing the belt and compressor, then installing the new unit with fresh seals and the correct oil before evacuating and recharging the system.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- The A/C system must be professionally recovered before any lines are opened. Never vent refrigerant.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves. Refrigerant can cause frostbite and eye injury.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the belt drive and electrical connector.
- Keep dirt out of the open A/C lines. Contamination can ruin the new compressor.
- If the old compressor failed catastrophically, the condenser and expansion valve may also need service.
- Use only the correct A/C oil for Toyota systems. Do not mix oil types.

Step 10: Reinstall the belt and under cover
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to reinstall the belt exactly as routed.
- Reinstall the under cover using a 10mm socket and trim clip tool.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
Step 11: Evacuate and recharge the system
- Connect the A/C manifold gauge set and vacuum pump to the service ports.
- Pull a deep vacuum and hold it to check for leaks.
- Recharge the system with R-134a refrigerant to the underhood label specification.
- Start with the correct oil amount only; do not overfill.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and turn the A/C on MAX.
- Check that the compressor engages and the air gets cold.
- Listen for belt squeal, grinding, or clicking.
- Inspect the compressor line fittings for leaks.
