🔧 A/C Compressor - Replacement

The A/C compressor on your Silverado is a sealed, pressurized part of the refrigerant system. Before removal, the refrigerant must be professionally recovered, then the system must be opened, the compressor replaced, and the system evacuated and recharged to the correct spec.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Have the refrigerant recovered by approved A/C equipment before opening the system. Do not vent refrigerant.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Refrigerant can cause frostbite and eye injury.
  • Battery disconnect is required before working near the belt drive and electrical connectors.
  • Keep dirt out of the open A/C lines. A single contamination can damage the new compressor.
  • Replace the accumulator/drier and the orifice tube when the system has been opened.
  • Use the exact refrigerant oil type and amount specified for your Silverado.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Belt tensioner tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Line wrench set
  • A/C clutch holding tool (specialty)
  • Evacuation and recharge machine (specialty)
  • Manifold gauge set (specialty)
  • Refrigerant recovery machine (specialty)
  • Drain pan
  • Fender cover
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Jack and jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • A/C compressor - Qty: 1
  • A/C accumulator/drier - Qty: 1
  • Orifice tube - Qty: 1
  • A/C compressor oil - Qty: 1 bottle
  • R-134a refrigerant - Qty: 1 system charge
  • O-ring seal kit for A/C lines - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
  • Make sure the refrigerant has been fully recovered before removing any A/C line.
  • On this Silverado, plan to replace the accumulator/drier and the orifice tube anytime the system is opened.
  • Keep the caps on the A/C lines until the last moment.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect power

  • Use a refrigerant recovery machine to remove all refrigerant from the system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using an 8mm socket.
  • Never open a charged A/C system.

Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a belt tensioner tool or breaker bar to relieve tension from the belt tensioner.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and remove the belt from the engine bay.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks or glazing and replace it if worn.

Step 3: Remove any parts blocking access

  • Use a 10mm socket and 13mm socket to remove any intake ducting or splash shields blocking access to the compressor, if equipped.
  • Set all hardware aside in order.

Step 4: Disconnect the A/C lines

  • Use a line wrench set to loosen the refrigerant line fittings at the compressor.
  • Remove the lines carefully and cap the openings immediately.
  • Remove and discard the old O-rings.

Step 5: Disconnect the compressor electrical connector

  • Unplug the compressor electrical connector by hand.
  • If the connector is tight, gently release the lock tab first.

Step 6: Remove the compressor

  • Use a 13mm socket and 15mm socket to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Support the compressor while removing the last bolt, then lower it out of the vehicle.
  • Watch your fingers around the bracket edges.

Step 7: Prepare the new compressor

  • Drain the shipping oil from the new compressor into a clean measuring cup.
  • Add the correct amount of fresh A/C compressor oil into the new unit.
  • Rotate the compressor hub by hand several times to spread the oil.

Step 8: Install the new compressor

  • Position the new compressor and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Install new seals and reconnect A/C lines

  • Install new lubricated O-rings on the line fittings.
  • Reconnect the lines using a line wrench set.
  • Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Replace the accumulator and orifice tube

  • Use a 10mm socket or the appropriate line tools to remove the accumulator/drier.
  • Remove the old orifice tube with an orifice tube removal tool (specialty).
  • Install the new accumulator/drier and new orifice tube with fresh O-rings.
  • These parts help protect the new compressor.

Step 11: Reinstall the belt and removed parts

  • Route the serpentine belt correctly using the belt routing diagram under the hood.
  • Use the belt tensioner tool to slip the belt back on.
  • Reinstall any intake ducting or shields using the 10mm socket and 13mm socket.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm socket.

Step 12: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Use a manifold gauge set and evacuation and recharge machine to pull a deep vacuum.
  • Hold vacuum long enough to check for leaks.
  • Recharge with the exact R-134a amount for your Silverado and the correct compressor oil amount.
  • Torque and refrigerant charge must follow the service spec label under the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the A/C on MAX.
  • Check that the compressor engages smoothly and the air gets cold.
  • Inspect all fittings for leaks.
  • Listen for belt squeal or abnormal compressor noise.
  • If cooling is weak, recheck refrigerant charge and system leaks.
