🔧 Malibu - Battery Replacement
On your Malibu, the 12V battery sits in the trunk on the passenger-side under a cover. Replacing it is mainly about removing the hold-down, swapping the battery, then reconnecting the cables in the correct order so you don’t create sparks or damage electronics.
Assumption: Stock trunk-mounted 12V battery with a vent tube.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧯 Keep sparks/flames away; batteries can vent explosive gas.
- 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; battery acid is corrosive.
- ⚡ Always disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
- 🚫 Never let a tool touch both battery terminals (or terminal to body metal) at the same time.
- 🧠 Keep the trunk open while working so you don’t lock yourself out if power is lost.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Torque wrench (5-30 Nm range)
- Trim clip removal tool
- Battery terminal cleaning brush
- Battery carrying strap
- Multimeter (digital)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 12V car battery (vented, correct size for Malibu) - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal corrosion protection spray - Qty: 1
- Battery vent elbow/tube (if brittle or damaged) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition fully OFF.
- 🔑 Keep the key fob at least 15 ft away from the car so modules can “go to sleep.”
- 🚪 Open the trunk and keep it open during the whole job.
- 🧼 If you see heavy white/green corrosion, have water and a rag nearby to wipe it (don’t get water inside connectors).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery
- Open the trunk.
- On the passenger-side trunk area, remove the battery cover/trim panel.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic retainers without breaking them.
Step 2: Identify terminals and vent tube
- Locate the negative (-) terminal (usually black) and the positive (+) terminal (often under a red cover).
- Locate the battery vent tube (a small hose that carries battery vapors outside the trunk).
- Take a quick photo for reassembly.
Step 3: Disconnect the negative (-) cable FIRST
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp bolt.
- Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the battery post.
- Tuck the cable to the side so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
Step 4: Disconnect the positive (+) cable SECOND
- If equipped, flip open the red terminal cover.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp bolt.
- Remove the clamp and position it safely aside so it can’t touch metal.
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down
- Locate the hold-down bracket at the base of the battery.
- Use a 13mm socket, 6" extension, and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt(s).
- Lift off the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs)
Step 6: Disconnect the vent tube
- Gently pull the vent tube off the battery vent port.
- If it’s stuck, wiggle it—don’t yank hard (the plastic elbow can crack).
Step 7: Remove the old battery
- Attach a battery carrying strap (a strap that helps you lift safely) and lift the battery straight up and out.
- Place it on the ground upright.
Step 8: Clean and inspect the connections
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
- Wipe away loosened corrosion with a dry rag (don’t let debris fall into the battery tray).
Step 9: Install the new battery
- Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reconnect the vent tube firmly to the battery’s vent port.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten with a 13mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs)
Step 10: Reconnect cables (positive FIRST, negative LAST)
- Install the positive (+) cable onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
- Install the negative (-) cable onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
- Apply battery terminal corrosion protection spray to help prevent future buildup.
Step 11: Reinstall trunk trim/cover
- Reinstall the battery cover/trim panel.
- Press trim retainers back in by hand (or use a trim clip removal tool to guide alignment).
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Use a multimeter (digital) to check battery voltage: about 12.6V engine off is a healthy fully-charged battery.
- 🚗 Start the engine and confirm charging voltage is roughly 13.5V-14.8V.
- 🧠 Reset the clock and re-save radio presets if they were lost.
- ⚠️ If you see a battery/charging warning light after starting, recheck terminal tightness and that the cables are fully seated.
