🔧 Seltos - 12V Battery Replacement
On your Seltos, the 12V battery is under the hood and powers starting and all vehicle electronics. Replacing it is mostly removing the hold-down and swapping the battery, but the connection order matters to prevent electrical damage.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the vehicle OFF, remove the key/fob from the cabin, and wait 3-5 minutes before disconnecting the battery.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last to reduce the chance of a short circuit.
- ⚠️ Do not let a tool touch the battery positive (+) terminal and metal body parts at the same time.
- ⚠️ Batteries are heavy and can leak acid; wear gloves and eye protection.
- ⚠️ If your Seltos has Auto Stop/Start, it may require an AGM/EFB type battery—installing the wrong type can cause early battery failure.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and keep it securely supported.
- If you want to preserve radio presets/clock, use a memory saver (a small device that keeps power to vehicle memory while the battery is removed).
- Check whether your Seltos has Auto Stop/Start (usually a dash indicator or a button that disables it). If yes, confirm you’re buying the correct AGM/EFB battery type.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm battery type and take a quick photo
- Use your phone to take a clear photo of the battery top label and terminal layout (helps you match the replacement).
- Look for markings like AGM or EFB on the battery label if your Seltos has Auto Stop/Start.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the nut on the negative (-) terminal clamp.
- Wiggle the clamp up and off the battery post. If it’s stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (it presses the clamp off without prying).
- Tuck the negative cable to the side so it cannot spring back onto the post.
- Torque to 5.9 Nm (4.3 ft-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the nut on the positive (+) terminal clamp.
- Remove the clamp from the post and position the cable safely away.
- Torque to 5.9 Nm (4.3 ft-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Locate the battery hold-down clamp at the base of the battery.
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the hold-down bolt(s).
- Lift out the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
- Torque to 21.6 Nm (15.9 ft-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Use a battery carrier strap (specialty) to lift the battery straight up and out.
- Lift with legs, not your back.
Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals
- Use shop rags to wipe dirt/corrosion from the battery tray.
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to lightly clean the inside of the cable clamps if there is corrosion.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Lower the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten using a 12mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 21.6 Nm (15.9 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first, negative last)
- Install the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 5.9 Nm (4.3 ft-lbs).
- Install the negative (-) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 5.9 Nm (4.3 ft-lbs).
- Install felt washers if you’re using them, then apply anti-corrosion spray to the terminals.
Step 9: Final check
- Gently wiggle each terminal by hand—there should be no movement.
- Make sure no tools are left in the engine bay and the cables are routed like before.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm normal cranking and no warning lights staying on.
- Reset the clock and radio presets if they were lost.
- If the power windows lost auto-up/down: with the engine running, fully raise each window and keep holding the switch up for 2-3 seconds, then fully lower and hold 2-3 seconds.
- Take a short 10-15 minute drive to allow the system to stabilize after power loss.
