🔧 CX-5 - 12V Battery Replacement
You’ll remove the old 12-volt battery from the engine bay and install a new one with the correct size and terminal orientation. This restores reliable starting and prevents low-voltage issues (warning lights, slow crank, random electrical glitches).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; batteries can vent acid and hydrogen gas.
- ⚠️ Keep sparks/flames away; hydrogen gas is flammable.
- ⚠️ Always disconnect the negative (−) terminal first and reconnect it last.
- ⚠️ Do not let a tool bridge battery terminals; it can short instantly.
- ⚠️ If your CX-5 has auto start/stop, do not “jump” terminals together to save memory.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- 10mm combination wrench
- Battery terminal puller (specialty)
- Battery terminal cleaning brush
- Torque wrench (in-lb or low Nm range)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 12V battery (correct group size for CX-5) - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal anti-corrosion spray or protectant - Qty: 1
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal felt washer set - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition fully OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
- Open the hood and keep it supported securely.
- If you want to preserve radio presets, use a memory saver that plugs into the OBD-II port (a small device that keeps power to the car while the battery is out).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access and identify the battery terminals
- Locate the battery in the engine bay.
- Identify the terminals: the negative (−) usually has a black cable; the positive (+) often has a red cover.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (−) battery terminal
- Use a 10mm wrench (or 10mm socket with 1/4" ratchet) to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the negative clamp off the battery post.
- Tuck the cable aside so it can’t spring back.
- Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs) when reinstalling later.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) battery terminal
- Flip open the positive terminal cover (if equipped).
- Use a 10mm wrench (or 10mm socket with 1/4" ratchet) to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the positive clamp off the battery post and position it safely away from the battery.
- Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs) when reinstalling later.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down bracket
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the hold-down fasteners.
- Lift off the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
- Torque to 8-11 Nm (71-97 in-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Carefully lift the battery straight up and out.
- If it’s stuck, do not pry on the case; re-check that the hold-down is fully removed.
- Lift with your legs; batteries are heavy.
Step 6: Clean the terminals and tray
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
- If a clamp won’t come off easily, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (a small screw tool that presses the clamp off the post without damage).
- Wipe any loose corrosion from the tray area.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one (terminals in the same locations).
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 8-11 Nm (71-97 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first, negative last)
- Install the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm wrench (or 10mm socket with 1/4" ratchet).
- Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs).
- Install the negative (−) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm wrench (or 10mm socket with 1/4" ratchet).
- Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs).
- Apply dielectric grease lightly to help resist corrosion, then apply terminal protectant.
Step 9: Final checks
- Gently wiggle each terminal by hand; it should not rotate on the post.
- Make sure the hold-down is secure and the battery can’t move.
- Close the positive terminal cover (if equipped).
✅ After Repair
- Start your CX-5 and confirm normal cranking speed and no flickering lights.
- Set the clock and re-check your radio presets.
- Power window reset (if auto-up/down stops working): with the engine running, fully lower the window and hold the switch down for 2 seconds; fully raise it and hold for 2 seconds.
- If warning lights appear, drive a short loop; many modules relearn after a few minutes of driving.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
