🔧 Camry - Battery Replacement

You might mean either the big 12V car battery under the hood, or the small battery inside your key fob. The steps are very different, but both are easy with guidance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15–45 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔋 Always work with the engine off, ignition off, and the key out of the car.
  • ⚡ When changing the main 12V battery, always disconnect the negative (-) terminal first and reconnect it last to avoid sparks.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and eye protection; car batteries contain acid and can leak.
  • 🔥 Keep metal tools away from both battery terminals at the same time to avoid short circuits.
  • 💾 When the main battery is disconnected, clock and radio presets may reset.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔧 10mm socket
  • 🔧 12mm socket
  • 🔧 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 🔧 3" socket extension
  • 🔧 10mm combination wrench
  • 🔧 Flathead screwdriver (4-6 mm tip)
  • 🧤 Mechanic gloves
  • 🦺 Safety glasses
  • 🪣 Battery terminal brush
  • 🧽 Shop rags
  • 🧴 Baking soda and water mix (for corrosion cleaning)
  • 🧴 Battery terminal protector spray

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 12V starting battery (Group 35, AGM or flooded) - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Battery felt anti-corrosion washers - Qty: 1 set
  • 🔩 Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Camry on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn ignition off and remove the key or key fob from the car.
  • 📻 Open the driver door and keep it open so you don’t keep waking the electronics while you work.
  • 🧊 Let the engine bay cool down if you were just driving.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is required for this job; no special scan tool is needed on your Camry for a simple battery swap.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the battery

  • Pull the hood release handle under the dashboard using your hand.
  • Go to the front of the car, lift the hood slightly, and release the safety latch with your hand.
  • Prop the hood with the hood support rod.
  • The battery is on the front right side of the engine bay near the headlight.

Step 2: Remove the plastic battery cover

  • Use your hands or a flathead screwdriver to gently lift and unclip the plastic battery top cover, if equipped.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not fall.

Step 3: Identify positive and negative terminals

  • Look for the + sign and usually a red cover on the positive terminal.
  • Look for the - sign on the negative terminal; this often has a black cable.
  • Double-check + and - before loosening anything.

Step 4: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet or a 10mm wrench to loosen the nut on the negative clamp.
  • Do not remove the nut completely; just loosen enough so the clamp moves.
  • Twist the clamp gently side to side by hand and lift it off the battery post.
  • Move the cable away from the battery and tuck it to the side so it cannot spring back.

Step 5: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

  • Flip open the red plastic cover on the positive terminal by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet or 10mm wrench to loosen the nut on the positive clamp.
  • Gently twist and lift the clamp off the battery post by hand.
  • Move the cable aside carefully without stressing any attached wires.

Step 6: Remove the battery hold-down clamp

  • The hold-down is a metal or plastic bar across the base of the battery.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the hold-down bolt(s) at the front or side of the battery tray.
  • Lift off the hold-down bracket by hand and set it aside.

Step 7: Lift out the old battery

  • Batteries are heavy; use both hands and bend your knees.
  • Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray using the built-in handle if it has one.
  • If it feels too heavy, ask for help.

Step 8: Clean the battery tray and terminals

  • Mix a little baking soda and water to neutralize any white or blue corrosion; apply with a shop rag.
  • Wipe the tray and surrounding area clean with a shop rag.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until shiny metal shows.

Step 9: Place the new battery in the tray

  • Make sure the new battery’s positive (+) and negative (-) posts are in the same positions as the old one (positive toward the engine side on your Camry).
  • Lower the new battery into the tray carefully using both hands.
  • Slip the felt anti-corrosion washers over the battery posts now.

Step 10: Reinstall the battery hold-down clamp

  • Place the hold-down bracket back across the battery base by hand.
  • Install the hold-down bolt(s) using a 12mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
  • Tighten until snug; do not overtighten and bend the bracket. Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs) if you have a torque wrench.

Step 11: Connect the positive (+) terminal first

  • Place the positive cable clamp onto the positive battery post by hand.
  • Push it down so it sits fully on the post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet or 10mm wrench to tighten the nut until the clamp does not move by hand. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if possible.
  • Close the red plastic cover over the positive terminal by hand.

Step 12: Connect the negative (-) terminal last

  • Place the negative cable clamp onto the negative battery post by hand.
  • Push it fully down on the post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet or 10mm wrench to tighten the nut until the clamp is snug and does not move. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if possible.

Step 13: Apply terminal protection and reinstall cover

  • Spray a light coat of battery terminal protector spray on both terminals.
  • Reinstall the plastic battery top cover by hand, making sure it clips in place.
  • Remove any tools from the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔑 Get in your Camry and turn the ignition to ON, then start the engine. It may crank slightly longer on the first start; this is normal.
  • 📻 Reset your clock and radio presets through the center screen menus.
  • 🚗 Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock while stopped; this helps some systems relearn steering angle smoothly.
  • 💡 Check that all lights, windows, and the infotainment system work normally.
  • 🔋 Over the next few drives, if you see any warning lights that stay on, note them and let me know the exact message.
