🔧 Atlas - 12V Battery Replacement
Replacing the 12V battery restores reliable starting and prevents low-voltage glitches (warning lights, infotainment resets, slow cranking). On your Atlas, the battery is located in the engine bay and is held down with a clamp at the base.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; battery acid is corrosive.
- 🔥 Turn ignition OFF, remove the key/fob from the vehicle, and keep it at least 10 feet away.
- ⚡ Always disconnect the negative (-) terminal first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
- 🧠 Expect memory loss (clock, one-touch windows) unless you use a memory saver.
- 🚫 Do not let tools touch the body/engine while on the positive terminal (can cause a spark/short).

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Turn everything OFF (lights, HVAC, radio), then open the hood.
- If using a battery memory saver (OBD-II), plug it into the OBD-II port and power it per its instructions before disconnecting the battery.
- Tip: Take a quick photo of the battery label.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
- If there’s a top cover or trim piece over the battery, remove it using a trim clip tool.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the clamp straight up and off the negative post.
- If it’s stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (this tool pulls the clamp off without prying).
- Move the negative cable aside so it can’t spring back to the post.
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Remove the clamp from the positive post and position it safely away from the battery.
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- At the base of the battery, remove the hold-down bolt using a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Remove the hold-down clamp and set it aside.
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs)
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Lift the battery straight up and out. Batteries are heavy—use good posture.
- Tip: Keep it upright to avoid leaks.
Step 6: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down clamp and bolt using a 13mm socket.
- Use a torque wrench: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs)
Step 7: Reconnect terminals (positive first, negative last)
- Install the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Use a torque wrench: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
- Install the negative (-) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm socket.
- Use a torque wrench: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
Step 8: Reinstall covers and clean up
- Reinstall any battery cover/trim you removed using the trim clip tool.
- If desired, apply battery terminal protectant spray to reduce corrosion.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and confirm normal cranking and no flickering lights.
- 🪟 Reset one-touch windows: with the window fully up, hold the switch UP for 2-3 seconds; repeat for each window.
- 🕒 Reset the clock and radio presets if they were lost.
- 🧰 Battery adaptation (recommended if your Atlas has a battery sensor on the negative terminal and/or start-stop): use OBDeleven or VCDS scan tool (specialty) and perform battery replacement/adaptation so the charging system matches the new battery.
