🔧 Pathfinder - 12V Battery Replacement

On your Pathfinder, the 12V battery sits in the engine bay and powers starting and all electronics. The key is disconnecting the cables in the correct order (negative first) and securing the new battery so it can’t move.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition fully OFF and keep the key fob 15+ feet away from the SUV.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable first to prevent accidental short circuits.
  • ⚠️ Never let a tool touch the battery positive (+) terminal and metal body parts at the same time.
  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection; batteries can vent corrosive gas and acid.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3" extension
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or small Nm range)
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Baking soda
  • Clean water
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (match group size and CCA to your battery label) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and identify the negative (-) terminal (usually black) and positive (+) terminal (usually under a red cover).
  • Have radio presets and clock settings noted; they may reset.
  • To make this 100% trim-accurate (correct battery type + exact torque specs), answer these two quick questions:
  • 🧾 Does your Pathfinder have Auto Start/Stop?
  • 📸 Can you upload a clear photo of the battery label (shows Group and CCA) and a photo of the hold-down bracket?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Power down and access the battery

  • Make sure the ignition is OFF and all lights are off.
  • Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable first

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the post.
  • Pro tip: Tuck the cable aside so it can’t spring back.
  • Torque to factory spec (I’ll confirm once I see your clamp/fasteners photo).

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable

  • Flip up/open the positive terminal cover if equipped.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut and remove the clamp from the post.
  • Torque to factory spec (I’ll confirm once I see your clamp/fasteners photo).

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 12mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the hold-down hardware.
  • Lift the hold-down bracket out and set it aside.
  • Torque to factory spec (I’ll confirm once I see your hold-down style photo).

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out (it’s heavy).
  • Keep the battery upright to avoid any leakage.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • If you see corrosion (white/blue powder), sprinkle baking soda on it and add a small amount of clean water.
  • Wipe clean with shop towels.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of the cable clamps until shiny.

Step 7: Install the new battery and secure it

  • Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 12mm socket and snug it evenly.
  • Torque to factory spec (I’ll confirm once I see your hold-down style photo).

Step 8: Reconnect cables (positive first, then negative)

  • Install anti-corrosion pads on the posts if you’re using them.
  • Reconnect the positive (+) cable first using the 10mm socket.
  • Reconnect the negative (-) cable last using the 10mm socket.
  • Apply battery terminal protectant spray after everything is tight.
  • Torque to factory spec (I’ll confirm once I see your clamp/fasteners photo).

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Pathfinder and verify it cranks normally.
  • Check that the battery warning light on the dash is OFF.
  • Reset the clock and re-save radio presets if needed.
  • Re-check terminal tightness after a short drive (no twisting by hand).
