šŸ”§ Sorento - 12V Battery Replacement

Replacing the 12V battery on your Sorento is mostly a ā€œremove and reinstallā€ job: disconnect the old battery safely, swap in the correct new one, then verify the car starts and electronics behave normally. The key is disconnecting the terminals in the right order to prevent sparks or damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn ignition fully OFF and keep the key/fob 10+ feet away.
  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first; reconnect it last.
  • āš ļø Batteries can vent explosive gas—no smoking/sparks; wear eye protection.
  • āš ļø The battery is heavy—lift with your legs, not your back.
  • āš ļø Don’t let a tool touch both the battery post and body metal at once.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 12mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" extension (3/8")
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery post cleaning brush
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V car battery (correct size/spec for your Sorento) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and keep it securely propped.
  • Turn off all accessories (lights, HVAC, radio) and close the doors.
  • If you want to avoid losing radio presets/clock, use a memory saver (optional). Most people skip this safely.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the battery and identify terminals

  • Open the hood and find the battery in the engine bay.
  • Identify negative (-) (usually black) and positive (+) (usually under a red cover).

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Wiggle the clamp up and off the post; if it’s stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (it presses the clamp off without damage).
  • Tuck the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back to the battery post.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

  • Flip open the red cover (if equipped), then use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive clamp nut.
  • Remove the clamp and position it so it cannot touch metal parts.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 12mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the hold-down bolt(s) and bracket at the base of the battery.
  • Set the bracket/bolts aside where they won’t get lost.

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Wearing nitrile gloves and safety glasses, lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Keep it upright to avoid any leakage.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use shop rags to wipe the tray clean.
  • Use a battery post cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until shiny.
  • Install anti-corrosion pads on the posts (or inside the clamps if your style fits there).

Step 7: Install the new battery and secure it

  • Place the new battery into the tray with the posts oriented the same way as the original.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 12mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) to tighten the hold-down fastener: Torque to 13-17 Nm (10-13 ft-lbs).
  • A loose battery can damage cables.

Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first, negative last)

  • Install the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm wrench: Torque to 5-7 Nm (4-5 ft-lbs).
  • Install the negative (-) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm wrench: Torque to 5-7 Nm (4-5 ft-lbs).
  • Spray both terminals lightly with battery terminal protectant spray.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Sorento and confirm it cranks strongly and idles normally.
  • Reset the clock and re-check saved radio settings if needed.
  • Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock once if the steering feels ā€œdifferentā€ at first.
  • Check for warning lights; if one stays on after a short drive, scan for codes.
