šŸ”§ Terrain - Battery Replacement

Replacing the 12V battery on your Terrain is a straightforward job: you’ll remove the old battery, clean the terminals, and install a new one. The only ā€œgotchasā€ are using the correct battery type (some are AGM for Auto Stop/Start) and reconnecting the cables in the right order.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF, remove the key/fob from the vehicle, and wait 2-3 minutes before touching battery cables.
  • āš ļø Always remove the negative (āˆ’) cable first and install it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
  • āš ļø Do not allow a tool to touch the positive (+) terminal and body metal at the same time.
  • āš ļø Battery acid is corrosive—wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • āš ļø If your Terrain has Auto Stop/Start, use an AGM battery if that’s what the original label specifies.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (3/8" drive)
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 5-60 Nm range)
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (match the battery type and size shown on your existing battery label) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure you have good lighting.
  • If you want to preserve radio settings, use a 12V memory saver (a small device that keeps power while the battery is out) with the correct adapter.
  • Confirm whether your original battery is labeled AGM (common on Auto Stop/Start) or non-AGM, and buy the same type.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Verify the replacement battery matches

  • Check the label on the old battery for AGM vs non-AGM and match it.
  • Confirm the new battery’s physical size and terminal layout match the old one.

Step 2: Access the battery

  • Open the hood.
  • If a cover/air duct is in the way, remove it using a trim clip tool for push-clips and a 10mm socket where applicable.

Step 3: Disconnect the negative (āˆ’) cable first

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back to the terminal.
  • If it’s stuck, use a terminal puller.

Step 4: Disconnect the positive (+) cable

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the positive cable off and position it away from the battery.

Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Remove the battery hold-down bolt using a 13mm socket with a 3" extension.
  • Lift out the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
  • Torque to spec shown on your underhood label/service information when reinstalling.

Step 6: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out using both hands (it’s heavy).
  • If there’s a battery vent tube attached (some batteries have one), pull it off gently before lifting the battery fully out.

Step 7: Clean and prep the terminals

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of each cable clamp until the metal looks bright.
  • Wipe away debris (keep it out of your eyes).
  • Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads onto the terminals.

Step 8: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using a 13mm socket.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the hold-down to the specification shown on your underhood label/service information.
  • Reconnect the vent tube if equipped.

Step 9: Reconnect cables (positive first, negative last)

  • Install the positive (+) cable first and tighten with a 10mm socket.
  • Install the negative (āˆ’) cable last and tighten with a 10mm socket.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten terminal clamp nuts to the specification shown on your underhood label/service information.
  • Spray battery terminal protectant on the connections.

Step 10: Reinstall any covers/ducting

  • Reinstall anything you removed using a trim clip tool and 10mm socket as needed.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally and there are no warning messages.
  • Reset the clock and re-save radio presets if needed.
  • If your Terrain has Auto Stop/Start, it may take a few drive cycles to relearn battery condition; that’s normal after replacement.
  • If you notice charging-system warnings after replacement, stop and re-check terminal tightness and cable seating.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹7,500-₹16,000 (battery + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹6,000-₹14,000 (battery only)

You Save: ₹1,500-₹2,000 by doing it yourself!

Local labor rates vary; a shop typically books ~0.5-1.0 hours.
