🔧 MDX - 12V Battery Replacement

Replacing the 12V battery restores reliable starting and prevents low-voltage electrical issues. On your MDX the battery is in the engine bay, and the main goals are to keep polarity correct and protect the vehicle’s electronics.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition fully OFF and keep the key fob 15+ feet away from the MDX.
  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; batteries can vent acid and hydrogen gas.
  • ⚠️ Always disconnect the negative (-) cable first, reconnect it last.
  • ⚠️ Do not let tools bridge the battery posts or touch body metal while on the positive terminal.
  • ⚠️ If you use a memory saver, follow its instructions carefully to avoid damage.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm wrench
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • 6-inch extension (3/8")
  • Torque wrench (5-25 Nm range)
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery carrying strap
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Baking soda
  • Clean water
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (correct fitment for MDX) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the MDX sit 5 minutes so modules go to sleep.
  • If you want to preserve radio presets/clock, connect a memory saver (a small backup power device) per its instructions.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery on the driver-side of the engine bay.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet (3/8") to remove any battery cover fasteners (if equipped), then lift the cover off.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the negative post.
  • Tuck the cable end aside so it cannot spring back to the battery.
  • Negative off first prevents accidental shorting.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

  • Flip open the positive terminal cover.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut, then remove the clamp from the post.
  • Re-cover the positive terminal end to reduce accidental contact.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet (3/8"), and 6-inch extension (3/8") to remove the hold-down nuts/bolts.
  • Lift the hold-down bracket/J-bolts away and set them aside.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Use a battery carrying strap to lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Keep the battery upright to avoid leaking acid.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • If you see corrosion (white/green powder), sprinkle a little baking soda on it and add a small amount of clean water to neutralize.
  • Wipe with shop towels.
  • Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both terminal clamps until shiny metal is visible.
  • Clean metal = better charging and starting.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one (positive post matches the positive cable side).
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket.
  • Use a torque wrench (5-25 Nm range) with a 10mm socket to tighten the hold-down hardware to Torque to Acura spec.

Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first)

  • Install anti-corrosion pads on the posts (if using), then connect the positive (+) clamp first.
  • Use a torque wrench (5-25 Nm range) with a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp to Torque to Acura spec.
  • Connect the negative (-) clamp last and tighten with the torque wrench to Torque to Acura spec.
  • Spray battery terminal protectant spray on the connections (light coating).

Step 9: Reinstall covers and final check

  • Reinstall the battery cover (if equipped) using a 10mm socket.
  • Gently try to move the battery by hand; it should not shift.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the MDX and confirm normal cranking speed.
  • Check that headlights and interior electronics behave normally.
  • Reset the clock and radio presets (if they were lost).
  • If warning lights appear, shut off, re-check terminal tightness, then restart.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$320 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
