๐ง Camry - 12V Battery Replacement
Youโll be replacing the 12-volt battery under the hood of your Camry. This restores reliable starting and prevents electrical issues like dim lights or slow cranking.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5โ1 hour
โ ๏ธ Safety & Precautions
- ๐ Always work with the ignition OFF and the key fob away from the car.
- ๐ Disconnect the negative (โ) terminal first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
- ๐ Do not let tools touch both battery terminals or metal body parts at the same time.
- ๐ Wear safety glasses and gloves; battery acid can be harmful.
- ๐ Lift the battery carefully; it is heavy and has sharp edges.
- ๐ On this Camry, you do not need to disconnect the battery for a long timeโtry to finish within 20โ30 minutes to reduce electronic memory loss.

- ๐ฉ Dielectric grease or battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
- ๐ฉ Battery hold-down hardware kit - Qty: 1 (only if existing parts are rusty or damaged)
๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ Park your Camry on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- ๐ Turn off headlights, interior lights, and all accessories.
- ๐ Open the hood using the interior hood release and then the hood latch under the front edge of the hood. Support the hood with the hood prop rod.
- ๐ If you have a memory saver tool (a device that keeps power to electronics while changing the battery), connect it to the OBD-II port under the dashboard before disconnecting the battery.
- ๐ Make sure the new battery matches the old one in size, terminal orientation, and rating.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the battery and inspect the area
- ๐น Open the hood and look on the driver side near the front; the battery is in a plastic tray with a top cover.
- ๐น Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently unclip and remove any plastic battery cover on top.
- ๐น Check how the battery is oriented (which side is positive and negative). Take a quick photo for reference.
Step 2: Identify positive and negative terminals
- ๐น The positive (+) terminal usually has a red cover and a โ+โ mark.
- ๐น The negative (โ) terminal is usually black or bare metal and marked with โโโ.
- ๐น Fold back any plastic terminal covers using your small flathead screwdriver if needed.
Step 3: Disconnect the negative (โ) terminal first
- ๐น Use a 10mm socket on your ratchet (or a 10mm combination wrench) to loosen the clamp nut on the negative (โ) terminal.
- ๐น Once loose, gently twist and lift the clamp off the battery post. Do not pry hard.
- ๐น Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal. You can wrap the end with a shop towel or rag.
- Negative off first, on lastโalways remember this.
Step 4: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal
- ๐น Use the 10mm socket or 10mm combination wrench again to loosen the clamp nut on the positive (+) terminal.
- ๐น Lift the positive clamp off the post and move it aside, making sure it does not touch any metal parts.
- ๐น Keep the red cover pulled back so you can access the clamp later when reinstalling.
Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down bracket
- ๐น At the base or side of the battery, there is a metal or plastic hold-down bracket.
- ๐น Use a 12mm socket with a ratchet and 3" ratchet extension to remove the hold-down bolt(s) securing the bracket.
- ๐น Lift the hold-down bracket out and set it aside.
- ๐น When reinstalling, you will torque the hold-down bolt to about 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Lift out the old battery
- ๐น Grab the battery using built-in handles if present. If no handles, carefully hold it on both sides.
- ๐น Lift straight up; it will be heavy, so go slowly and keep your back straight.
- ๐น Place the old battery on the ground away from the car.
Step 7: Clean the battery tray and terminals
- ๐น Check the battery tray for dirt or corrosion; wipe with a shop towel or rag.
- ๐น Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of the cable clamps until the metal is shiny. A terminal brush is a small round wire brush made to fit battery clamps.
- ๐น If you are using anti-corrosion washers, place them on the battery posts of the new battery now.
Step 8: Place the new battery in the tray
- ๐น Carefully lower the new battery into the tray, matching the same orientation as the old one (positive and negative in the same positions).
- ๐น Make sure it sits flat and fully in the tray.
Step 9: Reinstall the hold-down bracket
- ๐น Position the battery hold-down bracket back over or against the new battery.
- ๐น Install the hold-down bolt(s) by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- ๐น Use the 12mm socket, ratchet, and 3" ratchet extension to tighten the bolt(s).
- ๐น Tighten until the battery is secure and cannot move, but do not crush the case: Torque to about 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Connect the positive (+) terminal first
- ๐น Place the positive (+) cable clamp onto the positive post of the new battery.
- ๐น Push it down so it sits fully on the post.
- ๐น Use the 10mm socket or 10mm combination wrench to tighten the clamp nut.
- ๐น Tighten until the clamp does not rotate by hand: Torque to about 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- ๐น Close the red plastic cover over the positive terminal.
- Do not overtighten; you can crack the clamp.
Step 11: Connect the negative (โ) terminal
- ๐น Place the negative (โ) cable clamp onto the negative post.
- ๐น Push it down fully onto the post.
- ๐น Use the 10mm socket or 10mm combination wrench to tighten the clamp nut.
- ๐น Again, tighten just enough so the clamp cannot move by hand: Torque to about 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 12: Apply terminal protectant and reinstall covers
- ๐น If you have dielectric grease or battery terminal protectant spray, apply a light coat around each terminal and clamp.
- ๐น Reinstall any plastic battery top cover by snapping it back on. Use the small flathead screwdriver gently if needed to guide clips.
- ๐น Make sure no tools or rags are left in the engine bay.
โ After Repair
- ๐ Start the engine and make sure it cranks strongly and starts normally.
- ๐ Check headlights, interior lights, power windows, and radio.
- ๐ You may need to reset the clock and radio presets manually.
- ๐ On the Camry, the driver window auto up/down may need reset: hold the window switch to fully down, then hold for a few seconds; then fully up and hold again for a few seconds.
- ๐ Check that there are no warning lights staying on in the instrument cluster. If any appear, turn the car off, recheck battery connections for tightness, and restart.
