🔧 Pilot - 12V Battery Replacement

On your Pilot, the 12V battery powers starting and all electronics. Replacing it is straightforward, but you must keep polarity correct and secure the battery so it can’t move.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; battery acid is corrosive.
  • ⚠️ Keep metal tools off both terminals at once to avoid a short.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect it last.
  • ⚠️ Do not lean over the battery while loosening terminals.
  • ⚠️ You may lose radio presets and clock settings if you don’t use a memory saver.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm combination wrench
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • 6" extension (3/8")
  • Torque wrench (ft-lb)
  • Battery terminal brush (specialty)
  • Trim tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Fender cover
  • 12V memory saver (OBD-II) (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (Group Size 24F) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion washers - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle (keep it 10+ feet away).
  • If using a memory saver: plug in the 12V memory saver (OBD-II) (specialty) before disconnecting the battery.
  • Open the hood and install a fender cover.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Locate the battery at the front of the engine bay.
  • If your battery has a plastic top cover, lift it off using a trim tool.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal (-) first

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist and lift the clamp off the negative post, then tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • Negative first prevents accidental shorting.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal (+)

  • Flip open the red terminal cover (if equipped).
  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Remove the clamp from the positive post and position it away from the battery.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the hold-down nuts/bolts and bracket.
  • Set the hold-down parts aside in the order you removed them.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out. Batteries are heavy—use proper lifting.
  • Place the old battery on the ground upright.

Step 6: Clean and prep the terminals

  • Use a battery terminal brush (specialty) to lightly clean the inside of each clamp.
  • Install battery terminal anti-corrosion washers (one per post) on the new battery.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new 12V battery (Group Size 24F) into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (ft-lb): Torque to 9.8 Nm (7.2 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the positive terminal (+) first

  • Install the positive clamp fully down onto the positive post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp: Torque to 5.4 Nm (4.0 ft-lbs).
  • Close the red terminal cover (if equipped).

Step 9: Reconnect the negative terminal (-) last

  • Install the negative clamp fully down onto the negative post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp: Torque to 5.4 Nm (4.0 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Protect and reassemble

  • Apply battery terminal protectant spray to the terminal/clamp area.
  • Reinstall the battery cover using the trim tool if needed.
  • If you used a memory saver, unplug it now.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm normal cranking.
  • Check that the battery is secure and cables can’t rotate by hand.
  • Set the clock and radio presets if they reset.
  • If any warning lights appear (battery/charging, ABS, etc.), shut off and re-check terminal tightness and clamp seating.
