🔧 Encore - Battery Replacement

Replacing the 12V battery restores reliable starting and prevents weird electrical issues (slow crank, warning lights, no-start). On your Encore the battery is in the engine bay, and the main goal is to swap it without shorting anything and to reconnect the cables in the correct order.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF, remove the key, and keep it away from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; batteries can vent acid and hydrogen gas.
  • ⚠️ Always disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last to reduce the chance of a short.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a tool touch the battery positive and any metal body part at the same time.
  • ⚠️ If your Encore has a battery sensor on the negative cable, handle it gently and do not pry on it.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (3/8" drive)
  • Torque wrench (5-60 Nm range)
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery post cleaning brush (specialty)
  • Battery strap/lifting handle
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (correct fit for Encore) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion protectant - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal felt washers - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine bay cool if it’s hot.
  • If you want to keep radio presets, use a memory saver (a small device that supplies low power while the battery is disconnected). If you don’t have one, it’s OK—your Encore will relearn settings.
  • Take a quick photo of cable routing first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
  • If there’s a plastic battery cover, remove it by releasing the clips by hand and lifting it off.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative (-) terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the battery post. If it’s stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (it presses the clamp off without damage).
  • Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
  • Torque on install: 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs)

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the clamp off and position it safely away from the battery.
  • Torque on install: 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs)

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Locate the hold-down at the base of the battery.
  • Use a 13mm socket with a 3" extension and 3/8" ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt.
  • Lift the hold-down bracket/wedge out and set it aside.
  • Torque on install: 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Use a battery strap/lifting handle and lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Keep it upright (batteries are heavy and can leak if tipped).

Step 6: Clean and prep the terminals

  • Use a battery post cleaning brush (specialty) to lightly clean the inside of each cable clamp.
  • Wipe with shop towels.
  • Install battery terminal felt washers on the posts (one per post) if provided.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down and tighten using a 13mm socket.
  • Torque: 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

Step 8: Reconnect the cables (positive first)

  • Install the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque: 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs)
  • Install the negative (-) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque: 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs)
  • Apply a light coat of battery terminal anti-corrosion protectant.

Step 9: Reinstall the battery cover

  • Reinstall the cover and snap the clips back into place by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Check that no battery cables can move by hand; they should be snug.
  • Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • If the idle seems slightly rough at first, let it idle for a few minutes; the computer may need a short relearn.
  • Dispose of the old battery at an auto parts store or recycling center (most take them for free).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$320 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$200 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
