How to Replace the 12V Battery on a 2014-2023 INFINITI Q50 (Step-by-Step Guide) (Engine: Inline 4 2.0L)
Tools, parts list (Group 35), safety tips, terminal order, and torque specs for a clean install for 2014, 2015
🔧 Battery - Replacement
On your Q50, the 12V battery lives in the engine bay and powers starting plus all the electronics. Replacing it is straightforward, but you must disconnect and reconnect the terminals in the correct order to avoid electrical damage.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep metal tools off both terminals at the same time (it can short and spark).
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; batteries can vent acid and hydrogen gas.
- ⚠️ Disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect negative (-) last.
- ⚠️ Keep the key fob away from the car (at least 10+ feet) so modules go to sleep.
- ⚠️ No jack needed; hood-up engine-bay work only.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- 10mm combination wrench
- Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
- Battery terminal puller (specialty)
- Battery carrying strap
- Battery terminal cleaning brush
- Multimeter
- OBD-II memory saver (specialty)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Fender cover
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 12V battery (Group 35 equivalent) - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
- Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn everything off (headlights, HVAC, audio), then open the hood.
- If you want to keep radio presets and settings, connect an OBD-II memory saver (specialty) (it supplies low current backup power through the diagnostic port).
- Take a quick photo of terminal layout.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery
- Open the hood and install a fender cover to protect paint.
- Locate the battery in the engine bay and note which terminal is + (usually has a red cover) and which is -.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal
- Use a 10mm wrench (or 10mm socket with ratchet) to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Wiggle the clamp up and off the battery post, then tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
- If it’s stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (a small press tool that lifts the clamp off without prying).
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal
- Flip open/remove the red cover if equipped.
- Use a 10mm wrench (or 10mm socket with ratchet) to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Remove the clamp and position it so it cannot touch metal.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the hold-down bracket hardware (typically a top bracket with J-bolts).
- Set the bracket and hardware aside in a small tray so nothing gets lost.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Use a battery carrying strap and lift the battery straight up and out.
- Keep the battery upright (tilting can leak acid if the case is damaged).
Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean corrosion from the cable clamps.
- Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads on the new battery posts (or on the clamps, depending on style).
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket using a 10mm socket and ratchet.
- Torque to 18-22 Nm (13-16 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.
Step 8: Reconnect the positive (+) terminal
- Install the positive clamp fully down on the post.
- Tighten using a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs) using a torque wrench.
- Apply a light coat of dielectric grease and/or terminal protectant spray.
Step 9: Reconnect the negative (-) terminal
- Install the negative clamp fully down on the post.
- Tighten using a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs) using a torque wrench.
Step 10: Quick checks
- Use a multimeter across the battery posts: engine off should be about 12.4-12.7V for a healthy fully charged battery.
- Start the engine and recheck: charging voltage is typically around 13.8-14.7V.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm the engine cranks normally and there are no warning lights that stay on.
- If the auto-up/down windows stop working, re-initialize: with the door closed, use the window switch to fully lower the window, then fully raise it and keep holding the switch up for ~3 seconds.
- Reset clock and radio presets if you didn’t use the OBD-II memory saver (specialty).
- If idle feels odd, drive 10 minutes.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
