🔧 Soul - 12V Battery Replacement

You’ll remove the old 12V battery, clean the terminals, and install the new one with the correct clamp order. Doing it right prevents electrical damage and avoids sparking at the battery posts.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Your Soul uses a common small battery size (often Group 121R). Match the new battery by the label on your old battery (group size + CCA).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep sparks/flames away; batteries can vent explosive gas.
  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; battery corrosion is acidic.
  • ⚠️ Always disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect it last.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a tool bridge between a battery post and metal body parts.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is required for removal; you may lose clock/radio presets.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension for 3/8" ratchet
  • 10mm wrench
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Wire battery terminal brush
  • Torque wrench (5-30 Nm range)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V car battery (correct group size and CCA) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery corrosion cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, transmission in neutral, parking brake set, engine OFF.
  • 🧠 Write down radio presets and set your key fob aside.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • 🧰 Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery and identify terminals

  • Locate the negative (-) cable (usually black, marked “-”) and the positive (+) cable (often red, marked “+”).
  • If there’s a protective cover on the positive terminal, flip it open by hand.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first

  • Use a 10mm wrench (or 10mm socket with ratchet) to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist and lift the clamp straight up off the post.
  • If it’s stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty). A terminal puller is a small tool that lifts the clamp off without damage.
  • Tuck the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

  • Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Remove the clamp from the post and position it aside safely.
  • Tip: Keep the positive clamp from touching metal.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • At the battery base, remove the hold-down bolt(s) using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Lift out the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out (it’s heavy—use both hands).
  • Set it on the ground upright. Do not tip it.

Step 6: Clean and prep the terminals

  • Spray corrosion with battery corrosion cleaner and let it foam.
  • Use a wire battery terminal brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until shiny.
  • Wipe away residue (keep your gloves on).

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first, negative last)

  • Install anti-corrosion pads (one on each post) by hand.
  • Reconnect the positive (+) clamp first, then tighten using a 10mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the negative (-) clamp last, then tighten using a 10mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Spray both terminals lightly with battery terminal protectant spray.
  • Tip: Clamps should not rotate by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm normal cranking and no warning lights staying on.
  • Set the clock and re-save radio presets.
  • If your power windows lost one-touch function: with the engine running, fully raise the window and keep holding the switch up for 2-3 seconds to relearn.
  • Check that the battery is secure and the hold-down is tight (no movement).
  • Recycle the old battery (most parts stores take it back).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$350 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $120-$260 (parts only)

You Save: $60-$150 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
