🔧 Durango - 12V Battery Replacement

On your Durango, the 12V battery supplies power for starting and for all electronics. Replacing it is straightforward, but you must disconnect and reconnect the cables in the correct order to avoid electrical damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Battery is under the front passenger seat (most Durango setups).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area; batteries can vent flammable gas.
  • ⚠️ Keep metal tools off both terminals at once; it can short and spark.
  • ⚠️ Always disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect it last.
  • ⚠️ If your negative cable has a sensor module, handle it gently (it measures battery current).
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for airbags, but avoid turning the key ON while the battery is disconnected.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Torque wrench (foot-pound)
  • Trim clip remover
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery carrying strap
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (Group 94R/H7 or equivalent) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and remove the key.
  • Turn off all accessories and make sure interior lights are off.
  • Slide the front passenger seat all the way rearward to create room to work.
  • Have your radio presets saved; you may lose some settings.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery under the passenger seat

  • Use a trim clip remover and small flathead screwdriver to remove the battery access cover/trim panel at the passenger-side front floor area (near the seat base).
  • Set all clips/screws aside so they don’t get lost.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Wiggle the clamp upward and off the negative post. If it’s stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (a small tool that gently pushes the clamp off without prying).
  • Tuck the negative cable to the side so it cannot spring back onto the battery.
  • Torque on install: 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the clamp off the positive post and move it aside.
  • Torque on install: 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Locate the battery hold-down bracket at the base of the battery.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt and bracket.
  • Torque on install: 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Attach a battery carrying strap and lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Keep it level; batteries can leak.

Step 6: Clean and prep the terminals

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean any white/green corrosion from the cable clamps.
  • Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads onto the battery posts (one on each post).

Step 7: Install the new battery and secure it

  • Lower the new battery into place using the battery carrying strap.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 13mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Use a torque wrench (foot-pound) and torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect cables (positive first, negative last)

  • Reconnect the positive (+) clamp using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, then use a torque wrench (inch-pound) to torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the negative (-) clamp using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, then use a torque wrench (inch-pound) to torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Lightly spray the terminals with battery terminal protectant spray.

Step 9: Reinstall the battery access cover/trim

  • Reinstall the cover and clips using the trim clip remover and small flathead screwdriver.
  • Slide the passenger seat back to your normal position.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Durango and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Check that the battery warning light is off.
  • Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • If power windows act “one-touch” weird, run each window fully down and fully up once to relearn.
