🔧 Transit Connect - Battery Replacement

Replacing the 12V battery restores reliable starting and prevents random electrical issues. You’ll remove the old battery, install the new one, then reset the Battery Monitoring System (BMS) so charging works correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: battery is in the engine bay with a standard hold-down.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF, remove the key, and keep it away from the van.
  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; batteries can vent acid and hydrogen gas.
  • ⚠️ Do not short the battery terminals with a tool (can arc/weld).
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (-) cable first; reconnect it last.
  • ⚠️ If the battery has a vent tube, reconnect it exactly as found.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" extension for 3/8" ratchet
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or Nm capable)
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery cleaning brush
  • Shop rags
  • Flashlight
  • Memory saver (12V OBD-II) (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (correct fitment for your Transit Connect) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine bay cool if it’s hot.
  • If you want to keep radio presets/settings, connect a memory saver (a small device that keeps power to vehicle electronics) before disconnecting the battery.
  • Locate the battery, hold-down clamp, and note any vent tube (a small hose that routes battery gases safely).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the battery area.
  • If any plastic covers block access, remove fasteners with the appropriate socket (commonly 10mm socket) and lift the cover off.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the negative post.
  • Tip: tuck the cable aside so it can’t spring back.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the clamp off the positive post and position it safely away from the battery.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 13mm socket, extension, and 3/8" ratchet to remove the battery hold-down bolt(s).
  • Lift the hold-down bracket/clamp out and set it aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Grip the battery firmly (use gloves) and lift straight up and out.
  • Set it on the ground upright. Keep it level to avoid any leakage.

Step 6: Clean the tray and cable ends

  • Use shop rags to clean dirt from the tray and surrounding area.
  • If you see corrosion on the cable clamps, use a battery cleaning brush to clean the inside of each clamp.
  • If a clamp is stuck on a battery post during removal, use a battery terminal puller (specialty) (a small tool that presses the clamp off without damage).

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits fully down and flat.
  • If equipped, reconnect the vent tube to the battery vent port.

Step 8: Reinstall the hold-down

  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket/clamp and start the bolt(s) by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket, extension, and 3/8" ratchet to tighten.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first

  • Install a battery terminal anti-corrosion pad onto the positive post.
  • Push the positive clamp fully down on the post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to tighten the clamp.
  • Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Apply battery terminal protector spray lightly.

Step 10: Reconnect the negative (-) terminal last

  • Install a battery terminal anti-corrosion pad onto the negative post.
  • Push the negative clamp fully down on the post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to tighten the clamp.
  • Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Apply battery terminal protector spray lightly.

Step 11: Reset the Battery Monitoring System (BMS)

  • Option A (recommended): Use a scan tool (specialty) capable of Ford service functions and run a BMS reset / Battery replacement reset.
  • Option B (manual reset procedure):
  • Turn ignition to ON (engine OFF).
  • Within 10 seconds: flash the high beams 5 times using the stalk.
  • Then press and release the brake pedal 3 times.
  • If the procedure is accepted, the battery/charging indicator behavior may change briefly. Turn ignition OFF and wait 10 seconds.
  • Tip: timing matters; do it smoothly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Check that headlights, horn, wipers, and power windows work.
  • Make sure the battery is secure and does not move by hand.
  • Verify terminals are tight (no rotation by hand) and free of heavy corrosion.
  • If you used a memory saver, remove it after the engine is running normally.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
