š§ Sequoia - 12V Battery Replacement
Replacing the 12V battery on your Sequoia is a straightforward under-hood job. Youāll remove the hold-down bracket, swap the battery, then reconnect the cables in the correct order to avoid electrical issues.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Wear eye protection and glovesābattery acid is corrosive.
- ā ļø Keep sparks/flames away; batteries can vent explosive gas.
- ā ļø Always disconnect the negative (-) terminal first and reconnect it last.
- ā ļø Do not let a tool touch both battery terminals or terminal-to-metal at the same time.
- ā ļø If your Sequoia has stored radio presets/clock settings, they may reset unless you use a memory saver: a small device that keeps power while you swap the battery.

šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the negative (-) battery cable
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the nut on the negative (-) terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp straight up and off the negative post.
- Tuck the cable to the side so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.
Step 2: Remove the positive (+) battery cable
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the nut on the positive (+) terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp off the positive post.
- Cover the positive terminal end so it canāt touch metal (a thick rag works).
Step 3: Remove the battery hold-down bracket
- Use a 12mm socket, 6" extension, and 3/8" ratchet to remove the hold-down fasteners.
- Lift off the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the old battery
- Use a battery strap/handle (specialty) to lift the battery straight up and out.
- Batteries are heavyālift with your legs.
Step 5: Clean the terminals and battery tray
- Use a battery terminal brush (specialty) to clean the inside of both cable clamps until the metal looks bright.
- If thereās corrosion in the tray area, wipe it clean (avoid getting debris into your eyes).
Step 6: Install the new battery
- Set the new Group 24F battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one (posts in the same positions).
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 12mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
- Tighten the hold-down fasteners with a torque wrench: Torque to 18 NĀ·m (13 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first
- Install an anti-corrosion washer on the positive post.
- Push the positive clamp fully down on the post.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten: Torque to 5 NĀ·m (44 in-lbs).
- Spray a light coat of battery terminal protectant on the connection.
Step 8: Reconnect the negative (-) terminal last
- Install an anti-corrosion washer on the negative post.
- Push the negative clamp fully down on the post.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten: Torque to 5 NĀ·m (44 in-lbs).
- Spray a light coat of battery terminal protectant on the connection.
Step 9: If you used a memory saver, disconnect it
- Remove the memory saver (OBDII) (specialty) following the device instructions.
ā After Repair
- Start your Sequoia and confirm it cranks normally and the engine runs smoothly.
- Check that both battery clamps are tight: try twisting each clamp by handāthere should be no rotation.
- Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
- If a power window lost its auto-up/down, reinitialize it: with the engine running, use the window switch to fully lower the window, then fully raise it and keep holding the switch for ~2 seconds.
- Look for any warning lights that werenāt on before; if any stay on, tell me which ones.
