🔧 Escape - 12V Battery Replacement

On your Escape, the 12V battery powers the starter and all electronics. Replacing it is mostly a careful remove-and-install job, plus a quick Battery Monitoring System (BMS) reset so charging behavior stays correct.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; battery acid is corrosive.
  • ⚠️ Keep metal tools off both terminals at the same time to prevent a short.
  • ⚠️ Always disconnect the negative (-) cable first and reconnect it last.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on wires; only handle the cable ends and connectors.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim clip tool
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Torque wrench (5-25 Nm range)
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (matching OEM size and type) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and shut the engine off.
  • Open the hood and keep the key fob at least 10 feet away from the vehicle so modules can go to sleep.
  • Wait about 5 minutes before disconnecting the battery.
  • If you want to keep radio presets, use a memory saver through the OBD port (optional). A memory saver is a small device that maintains power while the battery is disconnected.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
  • Remove the battery cover (if equipped) using a trim clip tool for any push clips, then lift the cover off by hand.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the battery post.
  • Tuck the cable end to the side so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the clamp off the battery post and move it safely aside.
  • Tip: Cover the + clamp with a rag.

Step 4: Remove any battery vent tube (if equipped)

  • If your battery has a small vent hose attached to the side, pull it off gently by hand.

Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down

  • At the base of the battery, remove the hold-down bolt using a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
  • Remove the hold-down bracket and set it aside.

Step 6: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out using the built-in handle (it’s heavy).
  • Set it on the ground upright.

Step 7: Clean and prep the terminals

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until the metal looks bright.
  • Wipe with shop rags.
  • Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads on the battery posts (one per post).

Step 8: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket and bolt using a 13mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Tighten securely with a torque wrench: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the vent tube by pushing it on by hand (if equipped).

Step 9: Reconnect the cables (positive first)

  • Install the positive (+) cable clamp onto the battery post.
  • Tighten the clamp using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Install the negative (-) cable clamp last.
  • Tighten using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Spray a light coat of battery terminal protectant spray on both connections.

Step 10: Reset the Battery Monitoring System (BMS)

  • The BMS reset tells the Escape it has a new battery so charging works correctly.
  • Manual reset (no scan tool):
    • Turn ignition to ON (engine OFF).
    • Within 10 seconds: flash the high beams 5 times.
    • Then press and release the brake pedal 3 times.
    • Watch the battery warning light; it should flash to confirm the reset.
  • Scan tool method (if available): Use a capable scan tool and run the BMS/battery replacement reset function.

Step 11: Reinstall the battery cover

  • Reinstall the battery cover and any clips using your hands and the trim clip tool.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks strongly.
  • Check that no warning lights stay on after a short drive.
  • Reset the clock and re-save radio presets if they were lost.
  • Make sure the hold-down is tight and the battery cannot move.
