🔧 Battery - Replacement

Replacing the 12-volt battery on your Tacoma is straightforward. The main goal is to disconnect power safely, swap the battery, and make sure the terminals are clean and tight so the truck starts reliably.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid and corrosion can burn skin and eyes.
  • Keep metal tools away from both battery terminals at the same time.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • If your Tacoma has an aftermarket alarm or radio memory concerns, expect settings to reset after battery disconnect.
  • Do not tip the battery. Keep it upright at all times.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 12mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery carry strap
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Memory saver (optional)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn all lights and accessories off.
  • Open the hood and make sure you have room to lift the battery out.
  • If you use a memory saver, connect it before disconnecting the battery.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Negative first prevents short circuits.

Step 2: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal.
  • Remove the cable and keep it away from metal parts.

Step 3: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the battery hold-down bracket.
  • Set the bracket and bolt aside where they will not get lost.

Step 4: Lift out the old battery

  • Use a battery carry strap to lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Keep the battery upright.
  • Battery is heavy. Lift with your legs.

Step 5: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use a wire brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends and battery tray.
  • Check the hold-down area for dirt or rust and wipe it clean.

Step 6: Install the new battery

  • Place the new 12-volt battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket with the 12mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the cables

  • Install the positive cable first using a 10mm wrench.
  • Install the negative cable second using a 10mm wrench.
  • Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs).
  • Apply battery terminal protectant to help slow future corrosion.

Step 8: Test the repair

  • Start the engine and make sure it cranks normally.
  • Check that the battery warning light is off.
  • Verify headlights, radio, and accessories work properly.

✅ After Repair

  • Reset the clock and any radio presets if needed.
  • If the truck starts slowly, recheck both terminal connections.
  • Dispose of the old battery at a parts store or recycling center.
