🔧 Corolla - 12V Battery Replacement

You’ll remove the old 12V battery from the engine bay and install a new one, then reconnect the cables in the correct order. Doing it carefully prevents sparks, electrical damage, and keeps the battery secure so it won’t move while driving.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first to reduce spark risk.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools off both terminals at once; that can short the battery.
  • ⚠️ Batteries are heavy and contain acid; wear gloves and eye protection.
  • ⚠️ Do not smoke or create sparks near the battery.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm wrench
  • 12mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 6-inch socket extension
  • Torque wrench (in-lb/ft-lb capable)
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (Group Size 35) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to neutral, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • Make sure all lights/accessories are OFF and the key is out.
  • Take a quick photo of the battery area so hoses/cables go back the same way.
  • “Terminal” means the battery post the cable clamps onto.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the battery and identify terminals

  • The battery is in the engine bay. The negative (-) terminal usually has a black cable; the positive (+) usually has a red cover/cable.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Wiggle the clamp and lift it off the battery post, then tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • If it’s stuck, twist gently—don’t pry hard.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the clamp off the post and position it so it can’t touch metal parts.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 12mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the battery hold-down fasteners and bracket.
  • Set the bracket and hardware aside in the order you removed them.

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Wearing nitrile gloves and safety glasses, lift the battery straight up and out.
  • Keep it level to avoid any acid leakage.

Step 6: Clean the cable clamps (recommended)

  • Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until the metal looks bright.
  • If there’s heavy crusty corrosion, clean until it’s gone as much as possible.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery in the tray with the terminals in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Torque to 19 N·m (14 ft-lbs).
  • Snug is not enough—battery must not move.

Step 8: Reconnect the positive (+) cable first

  • Install anti-corrosion pads if you’re using them.
  • Push the positive clamp fully down onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5.4 N·m (48 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the negative (-) cable last

  • Install the negative anti-corrosion pad if you’re using one.
  • Push the negative clamp fully down onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp nut.
  • Torque to 5.4 N·m (48 in-lbs).

Step 10: Protect the terminals

  • Apply battery terminal protectant spray to help slow corrosion.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Check that the battery is solidly held and cannot be moved by hand.
  • Verify headlights, brake lights, and horn work.
  • If the radio clock reset, set the time again.
  • Dispose of the old battery at a parts store/recycling center (most give a core credit).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
