🔧 12V Auxiliary Battery - Replacement

On your Camry Hybrid, the most common “battery” replacement is the 12V auxiliary battery, not the high-voltage hybrid battery. This battery powers the computers, locks, lights, and boot-up systems. Replacing it requires careful disconnect/reconnect order and a battery reset afterward.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Do not touch or open the orange high-voltage hybrid system components.
  • Work with the vehicle powered off, key fob far away, and parking brake engaged.
  • The 12V battery is heavy. Lift it straight up to avoid back strain.
  • Disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last.
  • If you see orange cables or covers, stop. Those are hybrid high-voltage parts.
  • Battery disconnect is required before removal.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 10mm wrench
  • Extension bar
  • Trim panel tool
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Memory saver (optional)
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V auxiliary battery - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition fully off.
  • Move the key fob at least several feet away from the car.
  • Open the trunk before disconnecting the battery; the trunk release may not work after power is removed.
  • If your battery has a vent hose, note its position before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Open the trunk.
  • Use a trim panel tool to remove the right-side trunk floor cover and battery access trim.
  • Keep clips organized.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Torque on reinstall: 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable and vent hose

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal nut if a clamp or hold-down blocks removal.
  • Remove the positive cable carefully.
  • If equipped, pull off the battery vent hose by hand.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use a 10mm socket and extension bar to remove the battery hold-down bracket.
  • Lift the bracket out and keep the hardware together.
  • Torque on reinstall: 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up using both hands.
  • Set it on a flat, stable surface.
  • Clean the tray with a battery terminal brush if there is corrosion.

Step 6: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery in the tray with the terminals in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten it with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs)

Step 7: Reconnect the cables

  • Reconnect the positive cable first using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • Reconnect the vent hose if equipped.
  • Reconnect the negative cable last and tighten it with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • Positive first, negative last.

Step 8: Reassemble the trunk trim

  • Reinstall the access trim and floor cover by hand.
  • Make sure all clips seat fully.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and confirm the READY light comes on.
  • Check that the dash does not show a battery warning.
  • Set the clock and reset any saved radio or window settings if needed.
  • Drive the vehicle for a short test and confirm normal hybrid startup.
