🔧 Highlander - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Highlander, some rear lighting functions are replaceable “bulbs,” but others are LED modules that don’t have a simple bulb to swap. The most common serviceable rear bulbs are the rear turn signal (outer lamp on the body) and the reverse light (lamp on the liftgate).
Quick check: Which function are you replacing—turn signal, reverse, or something else (tail/brake)?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get very hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life. Use gloves or a clean towel.
- ⚠️ Support trim panels as you loosen them so you don’t crack clips.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim removal tool (plastic)
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range Nm)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (7440) - Qty: 2
- Reverse light bulb (7440) - Qty: 2
Note: If your tail/brake light is out, it may be an LED module issue (not a bulb). Tell me which light is out and I’ll point you to the correct fix.
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and open the liftgate.
- 🔦 Turn on a flashlight so you can see inside the rear trim area.
- 🧤 Put on gloves to keep oils off the bulb glass.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing
- Have a helper press the brake, turn on the hazards, and shift to reverse (engine ON, foot on brake) to confirm what’s out.
- Turn the vehicle OFF again before you start removing parts.
Step 2: Replace the rear turn signal bulb (outer taillamp on the body) — do one side at a time
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to pop off the small access covers/panels in the cargo area trim behind the taillamp.
- Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet and extension to remove the taillamp retaining nuts.
- Carefully pull the taillamp assembly straight back to release the locating pins/clips. Wiggle gently—don’t pry the lens.
- Find the turn-signal bulb socket (twist-lock). Turn it counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
- Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out, then install the new 7440 bulb by pushing it straight in.
- Reinstall the socket: insert and twist clockwise until it locks.
Step 3: Reinstall the outer taillamp
- Line up the locating pins and press the taillamp straight into place.
- Start the nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench with a 10mm socket: Torque to 5.5 Nm (49 in-lbs).
- Snap the cargo trim access covers/panels back into place by hand.
- Repeat Step 2 and Step 3 on the other side.
Step 4: Replace the reverse light bulb (liftgate lamp)
- Open the liftgate and locate the reverse light area on the liftgate lamp assembly.
- Access the bulb socket from behind (through the liftgate inner trim access, if equipped).
- Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
- Pull out the old bulb and install the new 7440 bulb.
- Reinstall the socket by twisting clockwise until it locks.
- Repeat for the other reverse bulb if you’re doing both.
âś… After Repair
- âś… Test all rear lights: tail, brake, turn signals, hazards, and reverse.
- âś… Make sure each bulb socket is fully locked (a loose socket can cause intermittent operation).
- âś… Confirm the taillamp sits flush with the body and liftgate (no gaps).
