How to Replace Taillight Bulbs (Reverse/Turn) on a 2019 Honda Insight
Step-by-step trunk-access instructions, required tools/parts, safety tips, and LED vs bulb guidance

🔧 Insight - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Insight, some rear light functions use replaceable bulbs (typically reverse and/or rear turn), while others are LED and built into the taillight assembly (not bulb-serviceable). The access is from inside the trunk by removing a small trim panel and twisting the bulb socket out.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Turn the car fully OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle area.
- 🔌 If you’ll be working near the 12V battery in the trunk area, avoid letting tools touch metal terminals.
- 🔥 Do not touch a hot bulb with bare fingers; let it cool first.
- 🧷 Don’t force trim clips; pry gently to avoid breaking them.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Plastic trim clip removal tool

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🧳 Open the trunk and remove floor cargo panels as needed for access.
- 🔎 Quick check: confirm which rear light is out (reverse, turn signal, tail/brake). LED tail/brake sections usually do not have a replaceable bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which “taillight bulb” you’re replacing
- Have a helper operate lights while you watch the rear: turn signals, brakes, and reverse.
- If the dead section is an LED strip (often tail/brake), it’s usually not bulb-serviceable and the fix is taillight assembly replacement.
- If unsure, tell me which function is out.
Step 2: Remove the trunk side access cover/liner
- Use a flashlight to locate the access panel behind the taillight (left and right sides).
- Use a plastic trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic retainers.
- If a clip center pin is stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver to lift the center pin slightly, then remove the clip.
- Trim tool prevents scratches and broken clips.
Step 3: Locate the correct bulb socket
- Reach behind the taillight area and find the wiring/socket going into the lamp housing.
- Identify the socket for the failed function (reverse or turn), based on where it sits in the housing.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket
- Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock and pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t pry on the housing.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (twist only if your bulb style requires it).
- Push the new bulb fully into the socket.
- If the bulb is a wedge type, it only fits one way firmly—don’t bend the contacts.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Test the light function before reinstalling the trunk liner.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–6 for the other taillight.
- Replace bulbs in pairs (left and right) for even brightness and color.
Step 8: Reinstall trim panels
- Reinstall the trunk liner and push the clips back in by hand.
- If you removed any fasteners, tighten with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to Torque to 5 Nm (4 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- 🔦 Verify left and right operation for the repaired function.
- 🧰 If a new bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse, socket corrosion, or wiring at the lamp.
- 🚦 If the dead section is LED (not bulb-serviceable), the repair is taillight assembly replacement.
